Odd fault, or quirk, poss prop bearing? |
|
I've got a MY2016 D4 Landmark, with 52k on the clock, it's currently under LR approved used (2yr) warranty, but is due to run out in September.
The car drives absolutely fine, but there's a bit of an issue that feels like slack in the drivetrain, I think it could be a rubber prop centre bearing. When pulling away from a standstill it feels like the car jolts slightly, it's even a slight bouncing sensation. Once on the move it changes gears smoothly at any speed or under any load. Also when the car is parked on the driveway, and placed in 'Park' without the handbrake applied it rolls a few inches. Equally when you then get back in the car and engage a gear a thud can be heard and felt from within the car.
It went to the dealer (Sturgess of Leicester), who I explained the faults to, and told them I felt it was prop related, they looked at it and reported back no faults found, unable to replicate on road test. They also told me I shouldn't be parking the vehicle without the handbrake anyway, and rather rudely proceeded to lecture me on doing so!
In fairness I had 3 tyres and alignment done at an independent today, and was able to go under the car and see/feel the condition of the centre bearing, and although there's a little movement within the rubber, it didn't seem as bad as I expected.
My question is, do others have this strange occurrence? Am I imagining it? It's been a while since I drove a D3, I really can't remember it doing this (different gearbox I accept, but same prop setup)
Thing is the car was also in for a random suspension fault at the same time, which they acknowledged had a code stored as a height sensor, but they 'cleaned it' and gave it back. Shock, horror, the fault returned again so it's going back to them ANYWAY, should I press them on this possible prop fault again?
My gut feeling is they know it's coming to the end of its warranty and they don't want to touch it. Yet they're also trying to shove a £700 year extension down my throat at the same time

I have a 2016 Landmark and have witnessed the same behaviour as yourself.
I believe it is normal, leaving the handbrake off makes the car roll until all the slack is taken up in the gearbox/drivetrain at which point it is 'locked' up.
When selecting drive the clonk occurs because the gearbox is forced out of lock up.
To test this, when stopping select Neutral, apply the handbrake and then select drive before releasing the handbrake again ... No Clonk (I hope) Gone 2016 Landmark D4

Hmm.. I'm suspecting the rear/centre prop shaft bearing.... see my and others on centre prop shaft bearing failure - and my 2015/16 has done next to no mileage! 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

Ours has only done ~45k and the centre bearing was picked up as on its way out at the last service. Cheers,

Thanks for the replies guys, car booked back in with LR in a couple of weeks so will see what they say again then. Must admit it does the clunk more when coming out of park, but it is there when switching between forward and reverse, almost like it's taking up some slack.

It's strange how the centre bearing failure manifests itself in different ways.
The bearing on my old D3 was totally shot yet you couldn't really notice it had failed other than visually. Even when the prop was replaced the car didn't drive any differently. However the bearing has partially failed on my 2016 D4 & the drive is terrible. Vibration through the chassis from 60 upwards & it's horrid at motorway speed.
In being sorted with a list of other things as we speak.

Agreed. Ours manifests as low frequency rumble at all speeds. Nothing horrible but certainly you can notice it (I can at least.)
Of course, I'm hoping its the centre bearing, else I've got bigger issues to track down and rectify... Cheers,
Gareth
