Oh good I was hoping that's what you'd say. It's with the manual stuff that I get most confused right now so the least I have to do the better. Laughing

I'll get pics definately!

The advice to leave it in drive is an acceptable strategy, but not a great one. It will certainly not get you into trouble unless you are tackling something way over your experience level. In all likelyhood you will have bottled it (*) before there are any problems.

What I would recomend is travel down a steepish hill in drive with HDC on. Notice how the HDC seems to be quite intrusive & noisy. Now loop around if you can and try the same hill in command shift 2. You will find that HDC is less intrusive and quieter and you will have a much smoother ride which is more controlled. When I first got my D3 I hated HDC as it would come on automatically when I selected various programs and engaged frequently. Then I started using the manual box on downhills and the annoyance went away.

You could then try again in command shift 1. Note that if the hill is very slippery (sand dune, wet mud, etc.) then you may find it is better in 2 or drive.

Steve

This is a rather sweeping statement....the selection of gears and settings is, as always, dependent on the specific conditions to be assessed by the driver at the time. Wink

I have not yet grown accustomed to HDC, and I have off roaded my LR3/D3 more than most people. I have found that Low range, 1st gear with feet off the brake is nearly ideal in all rock crawl or extremely steep descents. HDC always seems to be too fast for me. When I want it, I want it to be MUCH slower. As mentioned before, find a smooth steep downhill section and play with HDC and see what you think. Don't forget to use your cruise control buttons to adjust the speed in small increments.

There are three other things that take a bit of practice

1. Engaging traction control. It is not instantaneous, and the more throttle you give it, the less effective it is. If you are up on a rock and the rear wheels are spinning, let off the gas and you will feel traction control just start to kick in, but then you lose power and momentum and have gone nowhere. Feathering the throttle enough to allow traction control to do it's thing is a practiced maneuver but works amazingly well.

2. DSC. In muddy areas, sandy areas, or dirt areas where I am going fast enough that wheel spin is likely and possibly desired, be sure to turn DSC off. If going up a highly technical bit of rock or something, I often turn it back on, as it seems to make the traction control system far quicker to respond. I always turn it off going down hills, as the front left wheels seems to constantly pulse at the slightest hint of a slide or push, and I find that annoying. Note: on some steeper bits likely to introduce a bit of wheelspin as you power up it, take DSC off, because it will cut down the power output of your engine. I have had my throttle burried into the floor mats and turning about 800 RPM and going nowhere. Turn DSC off and you go charging right up whatever the obstacle is. DSC has it's place, but per the manual, needs to be engaged or disengaged at the appropriate times.

3. Left foot braking. Going over a large lump of something, such as a rock, it's really important to go up over it slow, power over the top, then come down it extremely slow. And that takes practice. You may find it beneficial to have one foot on the brake and one on the throttle. That gives you power and braking precisely when you need it. The goal is to come down off rocks slowly, without compressing your suspension so that you don't lose your ground clearance and cause interesting noises from underneath.

some good interesting points there from nwoods.
re Left Foot Braking - hands up if you can do it?
I had to learn it in a previous auto vehicle that had a habit of stalling at junctions. First time though [at road speeds] be prepared to go through the windscreen - but then it's like everything else you'll get good at it!!
Its great for after driving through floods and drying off your brakes, whilst not losing significant power.
