I discovered that Cumbria has what seems to me as a rank beginner, a pretty good rundown on its possible off roading lanes. with maps and and assessments of the conditions for each route.
Does anyone know if other counties have such information, especially Lancashire. Eagles may soar but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I believe You can get info from local authorities
Regarding local green lane or I think you can try the
Green lane association website.
As far as off roading goes tong near Leeds (parkwood 4x4.com)
Is a fantastic non damaging site for all standards of vehicles with the routes
Graded according to your vehicles equipment
The pay and play days can get busy but I find
I get more enjoyment from either D3 forum days
Or discovery owners club days where they have
Exclusive use of the site for the day.
Fantastic fun and the ideal way to learn
What you can do with a very helpful and friendly
Bunch.

Many counties now publish their definitive map on line. This shows the status of all riights of way including byways, any traffic regulation orders, or claims for upgrades to rights (usually from Bridlepath to Byway). They often also publish an online map of "streets" which shows all highways (routes with a higher status than Byways). The combination of these 2 sources gives you a definitive reference for all "green lanes". An example is Northumberland County Council's maps which are here :

These can take a bit of trial and error to master (esppecially the street map as it uses various "layers".
I am not sure if Cumbria has such an online resource. The National Park does publish an online reference to the available byways here :

Have a look at cumbria.gov.uk and look under Transport and Roads sub section Hierarchy of Trails Routes. Gives you plenty of info.
