That's a really interesting post, thanks for all the information. I don't know why you get the criticism you do, I for one think you do a great job.
 Cheers Scott.

Great post and always interesting to find out more information about these processes, especially when it includes stats about the vehicles most of us own (not you Del Whistle )

How many of the other vehicles in use have you personally experienced and how do these live up to the Discoveries?

Also not a dig at you or the service but any idea how much of the police motorway fleet has been reduced since Highways came on board so to speak and was money saving part of the incentive to the government do you think?

In the early days we would do 250-300 miles a shift, the cars would rack up 150,000-170,000 a year. When Government austerity came in we went to a more response only method and we now do about 140-170 miles a shift depending on what’s happening. So cars do about 80,000-110,000 a year.
We also have more cars so the mileage is distributed further
Now austerity is over we should see that rise but not to the levels of the early days

We pay pump price for fuel and tend to use supermarket fuel

Will probably use 1/3-1/2 tank a shift but that includes lots of engine idling rather than miles

If we had hours metres fitted it would show huge amounts of use

I used all the cars listed except the BMW

For towing the shogun is pretty good with low end torque
The VW was very quick but had cramped boot for the kit
The van was good for kit but could not tow
The L200 has lower towing capacity and reaching into the bed was difficult if you were vertically challenged
I believe the BMW was dropped due to boot space
Discos still best

We were never designed to replace the police but through cuts we have had a lot of “mission creep” a lot of Police forces have reduced fleet numbers especially 4x4’s.

Great description. I have lot of respect for you chaps, I recently left my job which involved lots of motorway miles, and I have to say I am not missing it one bit.

You have a difficult job, and everyone is just so impatient, I’m sure they take that frustration out on you sometimes.

Yes, a good read and thanks for looking after us on the motorways.
Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

Just an update we got our first D5 this week, not been out in it yet as it’s got an electrical gremlin from the conversation.

From the rear it looks like the boot would obscure the roof lightbar when open, this combined with the smaller rear side lights ... do you find you are less visible from the rear compared to the D4? Or is it just an illusion and it's the same?

You can clearly see the reds in the gap between the tailgate and the roof, so I don’t think it is an issue.
