OIL Change. (easier than you might think)

Slightly embarrassing

As with every car I have ever bought 1st thing on the agenda, oil change. I've always done it and always will. It's impossible to be sure that the right oil and/or filter is in the car so for me it's a non negotiable.

But with the 12 plate Disco Iv'e done a bit of a woops'y. Having struggled with getting the scratch plates off, splitting one socket and running about trying to scrounge a breaker bar as I had forgotten mine, Then cursing the the last guy on the up "to date service history" because there's no damn way these bolts have been cracked in the last 2 years let alone a few months ago. I finally got to the sump drain and drained out the old oil, re set the drain bolt, changed the oil filter and just as I was beginning to get a bit of pride back the Land Rover mechanic I share my hangar with Bow down walked in and said " why didn't you just use the service port, it only take 10 minuets? Shocked

aaghghghghghghghghgh!!! Big Cry

Still, it was nice seeing the underside of my new disco block and at least I now know for sure the Turbo drain mod hasn't been done. Also all the crud build up on the plates has been cleaned away.

Next oil change will be a bit quicker I suspect.

Have to say, The warm oil that came out was thicker than the "correct spec" cold oil that went in so I suspect it was needed anyway.

That's the trouble when guards aren't removed for oil changes, nothing gets inspected down below. I recently bought a high mileage 2014 D4 commercial and this is what greeted me when I removed the sump guard!

Mind you, i was aware that it had done some site work!

Looks like it was plastered over. Mine wasn't this bad, but I spent more time cleaning up the rusty fixings than I did servicing the car

I think LR designers could do a lot to improve the serviceability of the cars if they chose to, free spinning back bolts and rust are not a good combination. Just removing the protection for the compressor and I've had one bolt sheer off and two other fixings so rusty they were barely recognisable I had to dig the rust out of the heads before getting the key in. A better grade steel would work wonders.
