Oil colour

Just had my car's 60k service done last week and just checked the level yesterday. After only the 35 miles from the dealer to home the oil was black as a black cat in a coal cellar on a dark night! I know the oil changes black quickly but after just 35 miles??? Question Question

How was the old oil removed - up the tube or out the plug?

Mine was the same, turns black pretty much after starting the engine, I think it's quite common with diesels. The Qashqai is the same, although given the Qashqai's reliability so far it's not a good comparison to make.

Looks like taken out through the dip stick tube as doesn't look like Mantec has been disturbed. Oil is quite thin at the moment as hot (just done 120 miles) but ISTR was a lot thicker yesterday when I checked, car cold.

If they have taken it out from the dipstick , then there would have been some old stuff left in there .

From my experience with diesel engines ..oil gets black very quick with turbo engines

Part of the job of oil is to remove/carry dirt to the filter. If the oil stayed clean for a long period in a modern diesel engine i would suggest to me that perhaps the oil was not doing its job properlley. I would not worry as said above good oil gets black very quick.

I did an interim oil change on mine the other week. I gave it a good run first to make sure it was hot and all the crud in suspension was thoroughly mixed in, then drained it through the sump plug with the front of the car on ramps and left it standing like that for ages to make sure I got it all out, new oil and filter in, started the engine and bingo - black as a witches hat in no time.

In fairness though, as others have said, it's pretty normal for a diesel, I get the same on my td5 Defender and the Audi I had before.

I believe it's mainly down to the amount of combustion by-product that gets into the oil and the particulate size is too small to trap it in the filter.

The other point of course is that not all the engine oil is in the sump, there’s probably a litre or so of nice gloopy black stuff in the oil cooler and associated pipework that stays put when the oil is drained and then gets mixed in with the new stuff as soon as the engine is started afterwards.
