Oil consumption.

We got our disco HSE Lux new last September and have done 15500 miles, I have had to put in 0.5l oil, is this normal for a disco?

Bought a litre of oil for mine when it was new nearly 4 years ago, 'cos I assumed it would burn a bit when running in.
Still sitting in the rear cubby unopened - I wonder if it has a use by date. Thumbs Up

I got my 2010 model at 65,000 miles about 18 months ago and have added almost 15,000 miles to that, the oil level had dropped one segment on the display a couple of weeks before its service, so I haven't actually needed to top it up personally.

Although this now reminds me to check it! I just can't get used to only having the electronic method (this is isn't a post to lament the loss of the dipstick!).

Does the D4 system automatically tell you when an oil top up is required?

The red light

Dash warning message
That signifies you have got a very low oil level will come on at some point equal to or near the lowest bars on the electronic display.
By rights you should switch to check this periodically - maybe by milage or how often its used.....I dip mine every time I refuel (D3 with'stick, Jag with gauge)....this may seem overkill but it's your pride & joy you have shelled out for.....you can't reverse the laws of physics if you Censored up your engine...to me worth checking.....if you have a D4 it should be ready to display after you have filled, queued & paid for the derv so easy to do.
I top mine in quarters.....it never goes to half a dipstick or gauge.
To me it's bad practise to get the the off the dipstick no level or wait til the warning light message comes on
Basic user maintenance. Essential.
You can run out of fuel....... inconvenient & due to ban planning or being unlucky....
Running out or going mega low on oil is at best just daft.....at worst very expensive.
That's the reason of my thoughts as below.....
 BREXIT - done properly.

Thanks for that BFL. It is so easy to check a dipstick but with the D4 system of having to have the oil at working temperature and then having to wait 10 minutes, it's a hassle. I always seem to get distracted during the 10 minute wait and when I eventually get round to going into the service menu, the oil level isn't available.

It would have been much better if the system automatically read the level after 10 minutes and displayed it to you next time the ignition was switched on or at least kept it in memory.

Hugh

get you initial point though ...
the electronic gauge system should be able to tell you that you need some oil maybe when its at half way..
- but what irks me is - is the system with the warnings on the dashboard guage subject to the "waiting till it displays" ...warnings delayed also ?.....if it is - its nonsense.

Back in the 80's I had a Volvo 760 (B27 Douvrin engine) the had a waring light for low oil level (glowed at dipstick minimum) & a dipstick..simple system that worked & worked well...saying that it had a warning light for everything way before the real days of electronics & was a nightmare to work on.
 BREXIT - done properly.

Yes it does. It also monitors the oil level rising over time and you can access the oil level at any stage via a diagnostic tool or via the service manual switch procedure.

How low does it go on the display before it asks for a top up ?

Not had to put any in mine yet since last September.

That's pretty much identical to my MY14 D4. However, my MY15 has done 7,500 miles now and not used a drop. According to the display anyway.

As with the D3 engines, I think it oil consumption in the first 15k miles varies considerably.
