Oil consumption

I checked the oil today and was rather surprised to see the level only just registering on the dip stick. I've covered 6,500 miles of fairly hard driving since November. Probably haven't been checking the oil often enough as I guess I had assumed that the engine wouldn't be using any (no other new vehicle I have owned ever used much oil). Anyway, I had to add a litre of oil in to get half way up the dip stick.

Suggest, if you haven't already done so, you all have a look at your oil level. Does anyone think using oil at this rate is unusual or worrying, or would you say this was "normal" ?

Probably normal for a new engine and a diesel.

Does say in the manual that initially it will use more.

Also if driving hard I guess that'd use more ???

Not really a mechanically minded person - more computers me.

WILL check mine tomorrow - 5.6K on the clock and was last checked at 3K.

Cheers,

-s

Mine was the same, just over a litre for 6500 miles. I think its OK, my wifes Mini Cooper S used a lot of oil for the first year, now it uses none.
