Oil Leak. possible inter cooler?

Another week, another problem Banging Head

So this week I've noticed Moneypit smelling a bit oily. A look underneath this afternoon & sure enough she's leaking something.

I can see oil on both the OS & NS of the cross bar that the radiator / inter coolers sit on. It's worse on the nearside & has splashed back towards the drive shaft gater. Although she's not dropping anything on the floor yet. The oil looks to clean for diesel engine oil & has a distinctive smell that i can't place, it smells minerally, could it be gearbox oil?

I had the OS EGR valve replaced a couple of weeks back, but can't see how the two could be linked.

I've dropped in a couple of photos of the leaking areas. Any ideas to a diagnosis & ease of fix?

Also I noticed this outlet on the radiator appears to be leaking a bit, again seems oily, what is it?

Lol
I’ve been chasing the same leak for years
I put it down to the inter cooler outlet house, tightened this but kept showing oil in the area.
I think I have a small hole in the inter cooler low down on the driver side.
Hope you sort it.

that top jubliee clip is the gearbox oil.

clean the area and monitor/see if the leak is significant. over a week.

regarding the IC.
I would get into the drivers wheel arch, and remove the plastic cover. (4 clips)
Get a tray bucket, and undo the intercooler hose and remove.
You will get some oil drain out.
Clean up the joint and refit hose and do it fairly tight.

Repeat 2 weeks later. There shouldn't be any more oil over 2 weeks, otherwise the turbo maybe at fault.

Also look over the intercooler if you can. If performance it down, the IC could have a hole in it. Trace the oil for the hole!

Thanks for the reply PeteK

I'll check the lower OS hose connection tomorrow. I had it off the other day & there wasn't much oil in there. I guess it could have been removed when the OS EGR was replaced the other week & perhaps (hopefully) not done up tight enough. Just strange there appears to be more oil on the NS than the OS

Forgive my ignorance but is the oil in the intercooler engine oil, It just seems very clean for diesel engine oil. Also is it under pressure once the engine is running?

I've got no performance issues, infact it's much improved since the EGR was replaced. There is no black smoke under running conditions either.

Seems tomorrow will be a day of laying down, on my back under Moneypit in sub zero temperatures. The joys Land Rover ownership.

Agree with Pete, but if you think the oil smells a little different then it might well be the gearbox fluid dripping down from the oil cooler connection. Any oil found inside the intercooler is engine oil which escapes past the seals in the turbo. A very small amount is acceptable but if it was to keep appearing in quantity over a short period it spells turbo trouble on the horizion. Make sure all connections are tight and as has already been said clean thoroughly the areas and monitor it

Check the power steering tank fluid level to ensure it’s not dropping.

It was Pete who gave me the same advise as this post
I thought it was my rack when I first spotted it as it had blown back onto the rack
I found it about the 3 weeks after I bought her it had been serviced about 4 months prior my a main dealer in Derby as it had always been done as it had FLRSH
The leak was obviously historic as it had started to set with road dust on the plastic inner arch inspection hatch
Once I had cleaned the area I don’t get much more of a stain ,never marks the drive
I’ve had the issue about 3 years or more , she still pulls like a train with the Censored cabin on the back
Hope you find the issue. Thumbs Up

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

I checked the power steering reservoir when i looked earlier & the level seemed fine.

Yes, it could be the leak from the gearbox hose is what i'm smelling. I'll remove & re seat it tomorrow to see if it stops.

I'm concerned that this might point to the turbo. There seems to be a fair amount of oil leaking from somewhere, whilst it's not dropping on the floor yet there looks to be a fair bit. There doesn't seem to be anything notably wrong with the turbo performance currently. Are there any other visual sign of imminent failure if the seals are on the way out? I don't have any error codes on the IID of any note.

I think with what's been spent recently on Moneypit, if the turbo has had it's day SWMBO will put her foot down & it will be game over for D3 ownership & i'll be looking at VW Golf's Big Cry

So I stripped moneypit down this morning. Nothing conclusive found Shocked

The upper gearbox hose into the radiator was cirtainly leaking & loose. I've cleaned & tightened it.

The lower gearbox hose was also loose, attempted to tight the B******d thing.

The NS intercooler hose appears tight & sealed.

The OS intercooler hose connection was leaking. Cleaned & reseated. There wasn't much oil either which I hope is a positive indicator regarding the turbo.

The as certainly different fluids leaking from different places. The OS is engine oil. The nearside is gearbox oil, hence the point i initially made about clearer mineral smelling oil.

The intercooler doesn't show any signs of failure & is dry along the underside between the two connections at either end.

Did find another leak above the steering rack which looks to be a coolant hose (connections from rubber to metal) Perhaps someone could confirm from the images below? Thumbs Up

Good work Thumbs Up

I don't think the leak metal to rubber is coolant.
Isn't it the gearbox cooler pipes again ? (oil running down the rubber from the leak by rad connections - clean up and monitor)
or maybe PAS cooler pipe.

Morning PeteK,

Yeah, on inspection it does seem to be oil rather than coolant. It head forward into the myriad of pipes at the bottom of the radiator so i mistakely presumed coolant.

It's one to watch I think....

Does anyone know if the crimped joints on the gearbox coolant hoses (UBP500340) where they go from rubber to metal can be repaired if leaking or is it a case of replacing the complete set which is a couple hundred quid for the pipes, that's before you attempt to fit um?
