Oil level too high
I have taken delivery of three used cars (two D4s and a Range Rover) that have just been serviced. Each one Has had two much oil in according to that ridiculous gauge on the dashboard.
I suspect the garages, where time is money, do not wait to settle the oil level because the LR gauge takes too long and so they just put in a fixed volume. If we had an ordinary dipstick, time would not be an issue. Similarly, I find the gauge deeply frustrating and don't trust it.

I once read that someone had used a pedal cycle brake cable down through the oil change suction tube as a guide when refilling.
Making it is easy enough, and a large Ferrule would make a nice finger friendly grip.
Clearly the initial level has to be set by the dash gauge as datum, then the mark on the dipped cable can be made as the Blueprint for next time.
I would think a 'punch' mark on the cable would be enough to use as a level for the sump oil, and a mark level with the oil suction tube top would do the the job okay.2011 MY D4 HSE

AlthoughI have made a dipstick I have never found it necessary to use it, I find the dash gauge perfectly accurate and reliable.
When the sump is near full as little 1/4 pint is enough to make the level overfill, slight overfill will not do any harm It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

With the dash gauge, I did notice that it showed as 'overfilled' when cold and 'maximum' when warm. This is counter intuitive, but must be something to do with the way they calculate the level.Discovery 4 3.0 HSE Lux, 2015
