Oil level sensor on way out?? |

I gave my 65 plate D4 HSE LUX a quick interim service on Sunday, I change the Oil and Filter every 7500miles.
It’s so easy to do with the suction port and filter all being easy to reach on top of the engine and the suction pump handling the dirty stuff.
It takes 1/2hr or so, and I don’t even change out of my day to day clothes into something I can get Oily these days.
I hate the lack of a dipstick, and having to power the car up etc to check the level electronically.
I had the same issue as I had 7500 miles ago, and assume it’s the Oil level sender on it’s way out.
I wonder if anyone has had the same and then needed to change it?
The Manual etc says the Oil qty should be 5.9l, so I put 5.25 to 5.5 in then check the dash.
On both occasions the level has been too low, so I’ve added more, but that’s where it goes wrong.
This time, knowing I could easily suck some oil out I Kept adding @0.25l to see what happened.
5.5l – Oil level too low, below the scale.
5.75l – Same
6.00l - Same
6.25l – Same
6.5l – Same
6.75l – Overfilled, with warning message etc.
I sucked @1l out, in theory @5.75l added in total, and the level on the dash went back down to about ¾ way up the scale – Perfect.
That level has since been checked a couple of times after using the car and it remains constant.
So it looks like the Oil level sender needs to be taken too far up and brought back down again before reading correctly.
I’m not sure if it’s a simple Float type switch or something more solid state.
Anyone else had this? Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

My Indy tells me they put in 6L dead .
Is your car on level ground when you do it?

Yep, the car is on level ground, actually in my garage when I change the Oil.
I've found in the past that @5.75l gets the level to @3/4 way up the scale after the engine has been started, warmed up a bit, and left for the Oil to drain back to the sump for a few minutes.
(Note you can disable the 10min waiting time by having the bonnet open and pressing the Cruise Control CAN button twice)
The Suction pump will never get all the 5.9l out, and of course I'm really guessing when putting 0.25l in using the scale on the side of the 5l Container.
I'm really wary of running with the Oil topped right up to the max all the time, so 3/4 way up the scale is where I'm happy. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

For what its worth the pump will get out more than draining the sump !

Hi,
Is that with a tube attached to the top of the suction port or with a narrower tube inside to the bottom?
Just about to try & do an oil change for the first time and the pump from Amazon only has a tube that will go down the inside of the port, so don’t whether to get a wider guage piece of pipe, send the pump back & get a vacuum unit with multiple tubes.
Any advice welcome.
Also, is there a way to reset/clear the oiled change without resorting to using an IID?

The tube goes all the way to the bottom of the sump, slightly lower than the plug, hence it gets a bit more out than when you undo the plug. So all you need to do is attach a tube to the top of the suction port and voila!
I believe there's a way to reset the service notification, if that's what you mean. Not that I've done that.

I managed to empty the oil OK, although the electric pump was quite slow and doesn’t benefit from having a container that show the amount extracted.
32mm socket removed filter cover very nicely and filter change was easy.
Air filter was a doddle.
Cabin filter & fuel filter to do tomorrow (guessing the fuel filter is RHS even on LHD…
Ref reset: I don’t think my basic reader will do the business. Just a bit concerned about the DPF cycle being correct…
