| How should the oil level vary by engine status? |

Hello, apologies if this has come up a million times, but I tried searching the forum and couldn't find quite what I wanted to know.
How should the oil level vary by engine status? Ie meaning: cold vs running vs stopped for 10 minutes?
The reason I ask is that I had my D4-66 serviced last week. I did a regular weekly check of the oil level a couple of days later (via the dash and GAP-IID) and noticed it was overfilled. I was on level ground and the engine had been up to temperature (then left for 10 mins or so). The dash oil measure said "overfilled" and my GAP-IID measured 146m, which it calculated as 7.4L. I understand the dry fill is supposed to be 6.75L.
I then tested with the engine running (stationary) and the oil level dropped to 5.5L (GAP-IID). I assume it is normal to see a drop as the oil gets pulled from the sump into the engine, but what should it measure while running?
The garage that did the service then told me to take out 0.5L and measure again. I did this, and tested on a warm engine (ie up to temperature, then stopped for 10 minutes or so). The dash oil gauge said the oil level was on max but ok, and GAP-IID said 144m/7.3L.
So now I'm pretty confused:
* Why would the dash oil gauge say ok, but GAP-IID say nearly 0.5L overfilled?
* Should I trust the dash over GAP-IID?
* Should I take more oil out to be safe?

Not sure about iiD vs. Dash, but mine takes longer than 10 minutes to settle. I tend to leave it half an hour. .

Thanks, I'll try leaving it longer than 10 mins. Although wouldn't that lead to a higher reading? I guess the oil settles into the sump over time?

Everything including oil expands when hot, oil can expand considerably. I have come across dipsticks with two scales on them one side for “cold” and the other for “hot”, the variation was tremendous. The only sure way is to follow manufacturers recommendations, in the D4s case check before starting in the morning. It can when others can't,
