oil light & dumping all oil

Hello all,

posting here as I have a 3L tdv6 (albeit D5 rather than D4)and would like your opinions etc...

Yesterday I drove approx 400km with hirse trailer and had no problems.

This morning, was driving to work, and oil warning light came on on the dashboard.
There was absolutely no bad noises, and engine continued to run completely as normal (NO check engine light either!!)
I stopped about 300m further, turned off the engine, and called my wife to bring me some oil.

Opened the bonnet, and found that the oil filter housing wasn't as tight as it should be.

I tightened it, and poured in approx 3L of oil.

On the dash, it was now right in the middle of the gague, and was saying OIL LEVEL: OK

I then throught that everything was OK... calamity avoided!!

I then drove about 500m to the car-park. Before getting out, I though... lets just check the oil level again... OIL LEVEL LOW!!!!

I opened the door, and there was a BIG puddle of oil forming below my car.

It seems to have spat out ALL the oil that I put in.

I looked at the oil filter area again, and it was still very oily (i don't know if it was worse than before or not as I didn't clean it earlier since I didn't have any brake cleaner with me).

So... my question(s)...

given the risk of these engines "eating" their cranks.... can anyone make any guess was the issue could be?

What could cause the engine to spill all its oil out like this?

Is there something by the oil filter housing that could "break" or "leak" that could eject 4 litres (or more) of oil in a matter of minutes?

Flatlander… the filter was not even hand tight when the problem started.

I then first tightened it by hand, and tightened it with a wrench.

It COULD be that the gasket was damaged… I didn’t check it today. What I DO know is that it wasn’t leaking at all yesterday when I drove it on a long trip.

Disco_Mikey… I didn’t see any oil coming from the front of the engine. The D5 has electric fans not viscous fans, so there is a lovely view of the front of the engine.

The oil was certainly coming from the oil filter area, but is it possible for it to loose so much oil in a short time from the oil filter housing?

Could something else on the filter housing have sprung a leak?

THB.... I replaced the oil filter on Saturday, and can only imagine that I didn't tighten it enough. I didn't measure the torque (I don't have a torque wrench that goes low enough), but I did it up about as tight as it was when I undid it.
I have to admit that I was VERY surprised how tight it was when I undid it.

Maybe it is coincidence that it didn't leak at all yesterday (or sunday) when I drove.

BUT... today I tightened it as tight as I could again, I thought that the oil leak would stop, but it didn't... it seem to continue GUSHING out.

It could be the seal has twisted or become displaced by the oil pushing past it - you'll quickly empty the sump with the engine running and the filter seal not sealing. I'd also check the filter housing around the 'nut' to make sure there are no fractures - although that usually causes a fan spray of oil rather than a flood of it.

Thanks for that Flatlander.

I will HOPE that you are right and it is just the gasket round the filter housing.

I see from the LR Remote app that they have started looking at the issue (the windows and bonnet are open), so I HOPE that tomorrow they will call me to say that it was the seal that failed and the issue was. It worse than that!

How fast would the oil “gush” out past the gasket if it has failed?

It seems to have “gushed” about 5 litres in less than 5 minutes. Do you think that this is possible?

There is certainly oil all over the place round the oil filter housing. Also on top of the pipes behind the oil filter housing.

When you say that if the housing has fractured that it would spray out, could this be the outcome?

As soon as I know more, I will update this thread.

This is something that I would have done myself, but since my D5 is still under warranty, I have to stay in the dealership network.

So... My D5 is not dead.

The issue was the gasket around the oil filter housing. It had been pinched slightly when being fitted, and obviously after a time have given way and was spewing oil out.

They think that I was lucky and turned the engine off quickly enough not to have damaged anything.

I am going to wait another 500kms and then check the oil filter and see if there is any glitter in it. If it is clean, then I am lucky and no harm done.

If there is glitter, then sadly I know that the bearings have been worn, and I will then do another oil flush and then have to pray every time I drive the car!!

I think you'd be very unlucky for anything to have picked up, the surfaces will still have been oiled, it takes very little to lubricate a new engine at build for a cold test - I think it was 24ml for the 2.7 TDV6 and obviously no oil pressure, the oil was sprayed in to specific locations prior to the sump being fitted.

Just be careful fitting the replacement filter and sealing ring! a swipe of fresh oil on it once fitted to the housing will prevent it catching and deforming.

I Hope you are right!!

I did put oil on the gasket before fitting it. I used to have a D3 and a RRS and did all the services myself. This is the first time I have had this issue!!

The only thing is that this time I bought a Bosch filter not a LR one. The gasket from LR is a square cross section unless I am mistaken, but this one was a ROUND gasket.

I am going to order some LR filters and keep them in stock.
