oil overfill
I had the Disco in for a service recently incl oil change. I now checked the the oil level in the service menu and it shows overfill. I have checked the invoice and it shows 7 liters of oil.
I checked the manual which states just 5,7 liters to be filled after oil change incl filter. So now there is around one liter of surplus oil in the engine.
Is this going to do any harm to the engine? The car is not giving me any warning in the message center about oil overfill but in the oil level menu it shows overfill.
Is there an easy way to get rid of the surplus oil Life in the slow lane

You must remove the excess oil as it will cause damage.
On the front of the engine, not far from the oil filler cap, there is a black tube with a black plastic cap. This is the oil extraction tube and leads down to the base of the sump.
Connect an oil vacuum pump to the pipe under the cap and suck the oil out until the level is correct.

Good advice from Clubber & Robbie, I would prefer getting the garage to do it.
It's all a matter of degree but overfilling can cause windage where the crankshaft is whipped up into a froth meaning that the oil no longer does what's expected of it.
It can also increase the crankcase pressure thus putting a strain on oil seals.

once, regretfully, ran a Citroen van with too much oil in
the turbo seal blew up at krilder, the engine wouldnt turn off as it was burning the oil in the dump
when it finally died two of the Pistons were molten wrecks and it needed a new engine
don't run it

Thanks everybody, especially Robbie for the hint with black tube. Learning everyday
I connected a small plastic tube and got rid of some oil. Since I don't have a pump I had to do it the old fashioned way. 5W30 is not really tasty
Now the oil level shows full scale up to MAX, but not above and the dislplay shows OK and not overfill anymore. I hope that's ok now.Life in the slow lane

I said from the start it (the dopey oil level sensor) would cause tears
your service dealer getting it wrong exemplifies my thoughts if mindlessly a mechanic overfills the engine....you have bought & are caring for is comprised.
I would have a real pop at the dealer...getting this basic one totally wrong doesn't bode well for more complex things.BREXIT - done properly.

I guess oil is not the easiest fluid to suck; it must have been like a really thick milkshake through a thin straw! Well, without the nice taste at the end.
It should be fine now but it is worth getting a simple oil extractor at some point as you really don't want to be sucking down oil again. Being the cautious type I would be minded to extract oil until you are below max and top-up from there.
