Oil Pump Change.

Hi, Sorry as I know this has been done to death, any way of identifying if I have the strengthened pump... other than taking the timing belt cover off.

a new belt was fitted 53k Miles in 2018 and the disco now has 83k miles so its not due for a cam belt yet. no suggestion in the history that a pump has been fitted so should I just get it done regardless.

Thanks.

Hey Chris, there’s no official way of finding out without taking the timing belt cover and all of the auxiliary belts off to take a look.

I’m in the same boat, belts don’t need changing for a while, and don’t want to go through the cost of having the front end off only to find the pumps ok. If I do it myself and find the pump need swapping, it’ll have to all go back together to take it to a garage as I don’t trust myself with a pump change after reading the horror stories of millimetre tolerance Smile

One thing I’m thinking of (and I’m sure it’ll get a response on here) is to drill a 10mm hole in the cover in the right place (red circle) to get a boroscope through to inspect the pump, filling the hole with a rubber grommet after.

I can’t see an issue, but if it’s that simple why hasn't it been done before :s

If it is a D4, it will have the updated pump.

if it is a D4 with the 2,7 engine the oil pump might need to be upgraded. I would follow the idea to look behind the scenes with an endoscope like the Bosch GIC 120

You have posted in the Maintenance & Mods (D4) section so one assumes you have a D4 - but now your profile indicates a D3 - what is it and what year.?

So the decision has been made for me as I noticed a slight oil leak coming from the front and can see oil coming from around the timing pulley on the Crank. Have ordered the Fomoco pump and belt kit from Advanced Factors and also a genuine oil seal. Just waiting for a couple of dry days to get into it 🥶

If you bought the genuine seal, don’t forget the tool for the seal!

The victor Reinz seal tool is as straight and sharp as the crankshaft itself, so the tension on the teflon lip will be as instant as fitting it straight to the crankshaft…. That is why the JLR tool is conical shaped

The VR seal is pre fitted on their tool for the same reasons…

Ok on mine it has a rounded end that goes wider as you push the seal along…

Made a start today!

The obligatory “cam belt pic” to prove It Smile

I would have taken more pics but with both hands and arms black with old oil and grease I just decided I needed to crack on, I felt a bit like James Herriot trying to get a calf out for most of the time, started with the starter motor as I knew this was going to be a knarley job but managed to get the positive cable off then with the bracket removed and the fuel cooler loose and pushed to one side I managed to move the starter motor out of the way without having to disconnect it completely.

Alternator was not too bad I found my impulse tool buying paid off and a 13mm flexi head ratchet spanner was the tool for the job for the bottom bolts.

Timing pins and flywheel tool are in place and 3 out of 5 bolts done on the alternator bracket so far before I quit for the day.

In comparison the timing cover itself was the easy task. !

Hopefully another dry day tomorrow ! About 3 hours in so far….
