After some expert oil spec help please. Just coming up on 5th(car is Jan 05) service at 46k having done 8k in the last year and 7k previous to that. My local independent has recommended 10/40 Quantum VW oil for the service on the basis of engine age. They did the servicing last year but not sure if they put 5/30 or 10/40 in at that time.Does anybody have any thoughts on this? The guy does know his stuff having worked for LR on the development of the D3 (and has a prototype vehicle himself) and at a main dealer before going independent. Just to clarify i know the manual says 5/30 but i am relying on peoples expertise on this hence throwing it out there. Need to be careful of not upsetting a guy with alot of knowledge on the car who has been spot on with everything else he has done to the vehicle armed only with the 'well i read on the internet' keyboard warrior line. Why that spec? You're hardly a high mileage user and personally I'd stick with the Castrol Edge type oil 5w30 or similar synthetic oil to that spec. Oilman is the member to speak to for definitive info on which type to use. Bodsys Brake Bible

Yeah, I get that's what he said, but I really can't understand why he should change it just with that age. It should realy go based on wear and you've got very low mileage for the age I really see no reason to change the manufacturers recommended specs.
Characters 300,000+ mileage D3 just uses the std manufacturer spec oil.
Is he an older chap by any chance? Back to the days when engines wore out quicker & oils needed to be changed up or down spec more regularly......?
My personal opinion is to stick with the std manufacturers oils. Fully synthetic 5w30. Bodsys Brake Bible

Just to second what bodsy has already said,
The mileage doesent warrant a thicker Oil either at start up or when up to temp ? why he has said this i do not know, i understand that he has related the spec of oil to the age of the vehicle however by modern day standards the engine is barely run in ?
I would stick to 5W / 30
As said characters D3 has just clipped 300 K
With a good dose of preventative maintenance and regular Oil changes there is no reason why yours, Mine & every one elses shouldnt see this kind of mileage in its lifetime.
I hope this makes sense,

As far as I can see, the specified oil (ACEA: B1 or B3) can be got as either semi or full synthetic
Is this correct, although I presume the full synthetic is better?

I used to use Morris's 5-30 oil in my old td5,i know it's cheap stuff but used to change it every5-6 k miles,my d3 was serviced in October, someone on here recomended miller's oils for d3's so I might go for some of that next time, unless someone can recomend the l/r type From main stealers ?

Current handbook says a 5W 30 oil meeting ACEA C2. That's for Disco 4, but is ok, i believe, for older vehicles also. Good oil for vehicles with DPF.

I use morris oils in all vehicles. 5w30 semi is spot on for tdv6. Alot of manufacturers have stopped insisting on full synthetic anyway.

I only do about 10k a year and always change my oil once a year needed or not (wife does 2k in her xtype 3.0se still do it every year).
I look after a few other landys and some go 15k and have no problem.
Use a genuine filter cos cheaper than good after market.
