Oil usage
Guys
On the TDV6, how much oil are you using, as this thing seems to use much more than my TD5 ever did. I've put in 3 litres over the first 12k miles, whereas the TD5 used less than a litre over the same mileage.

used just under a litre, same mileage - but I did have an intermediate oil change..
seems to vary quite a lot with no common reason as long as it isn't leaking, I wouldn't worry, due to the high compression ratio's, diesel engines are expected to use some oil. I used to work for a Co. that operated 54 generators as prime sets ranging from 112kVA to 600kVA, we used over 2000 litres a month just in top-ups

thanks TFC - and second stupid question, as the dipstick is one of these wire things with orange plastic lumps on it, when I pull it out, the middle two have oil on one side, only the bottom one has oil all round, so I'm assuming this is the oil level.
thanks

Well I work on the same principle, so we're either both right or both wrong

I have just checked my oil, and it is only just showing on the bottom edge of the bottom ball, so obviously I topped it up. The daft thing is, the car had its 45k service 2 weeks ago, and has only done 1500 miles since. I suspect that the dealers may not be putting enough oil in to start with.
1 litre will bring it to the top half of the dipstick, and mine did not need any oil between 30k and 45 k service. In that period it dropped from the bottom of the top ball to the bottom of the next ball, not enough to warrant a top up.

After 5,250 miles my D3 has used 1/5 of a lt!
I'm getting an oil & filter change at 6k miles though. It's just what I'm used to doing & feel happy to continue to do so. The cost is minimum & although I don't plan on keeping it for more than 3 years, you never know.

Roughly how much do you need to put in to get the dipstick reading to move from top to bottom (or one ball if this is a better measure)?Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Try 1/4 a litre first, then another, then another ....as required.
Also the engine doesn't necessarily burn the oil off, I have it on good authority that a reasonable quantity of oil is absorbed by the block during the first 8 to 10k. This absorption forms a waterproof shield to help protect the semi- pourous block etc. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
That would explain why I put .5l in at 4500 miles and not a drop since. Mileage now 8900.TDV6 SE auto, Java / Alpacca
