One rear tyre stepped on outer edge

Had my first MOT this week. I got an advisory that my nearside rear tyre is stepped on the outside edge.

I have Pirelli scorpion on 20" standard wheels. These are original tyres which have done 24k miles and down to 4-5mm. I know there has been mention that these tyre tramline as they get to 5mm, are these two things connected?

What is stepping and any advice on what might have caused the issue on a single tyre?

Many thanks
 Gary

Get a four wheel alignment done. I had my n/s front left wear more on the outside inch very quickly. All four wheels were out. Depending on where you are in Kent I used A2 tyres in Sittingbourne.

Tks Batfink. I'm in Whitstable so not far from there. It's still under warranty (just), do you think it's something that should be covered. Why would this affect one tyre? Because only one wheel is out?

Cheers

It could do. I only had one wearing but all four wheels were pointing in different directions. I did replace both fronts rather than just one. Dont like odd tyres on an axle. Don't think a warranty would cover that. If it's the standard 3 month one from most independent dealers definitely not.

The advice to get the alignment checked is the way forward.

On motorcycles a technique for steering is called 'counter steering' and one of the effects is uneven wear over the life of the tyre often referred to as 'Scalloping' a clearly visible stepped pattern of wear.

Some bikers ride this way and do not realise, it sounds odd but in practice could prevent loss of control on a motorcycle.

This is due to several forces reacting against each other and would show up on one wheel on a car if the tracking was out or suspension needs attention.

I know this is motorcycle related but a long time ago I noticed this wear pattern on my car tyres, (not Land Rovers) and it was tracking related problems bushes drop links etc..

Just a bit of experience/knowledge?

Rub the palm of your hand round the circumference of the tyre in both directions, in one direction it will be smooth because you are going down the “step” in the other direction it will feel rough as you are going up the “step”.
Some makes of tyre Pirelli for one are prone to this when the tyres are down to 3/4 mm of tread, if the car is under warranty you may have a claim for a contribution to a new tyre (I did) as the alignment may be slightly out, but beware of main dealer tyre prices.
The wheels should be rotatated at service time to even this wear out and that is the simplest way out, but it is often not done, swap the wheels round as per service schedule.
I don’t think it is anything to worry about, just something for a friendly MOT inspector to advise you about. Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Tks all. The car is still under LR warranty being just under 3 years old so will see what they say.

Worth a try, but my Dealer said LR would only contribute up to a few months from new as they don't know what an owner may have done such as kerbing it.

Well my stepped tyre issues are over.
Whilst doing a health check yesterday LR found a cut down to the cords in the middle of the rear tyres they picked up stepping on first. Got it replaced and the new spare on the other side. Bit disappointed, they stuck the spare on without checking the pressure (new tyre was exactly correct at 37). I came home with 44lb in the tyre that side.

Silver lining though. I noticed the spare wheel had a small patch of bubbling on it. Showed them before I pulled away and they advised they would replace under warranty. Shame they didn't notice , but we all know what these dealers' attention to details is like.

Will monitor these new tyres to see if any abnormal wear.

Cheers
