Are you having it stopped down to see what's happened or just assuming its toast and putting in a "new" engine? You're between the proverbial rock and a hard place, spend on seeing if it can be repaired or just assume it is and change the lump.

I’m assuming I’m going to have to replace the lump, but need to strip it enough to confirm where that metal in the oil filter has come from.
I’m working on the assumpton I’m better off with a replacement engine with some warranty in an otherwise decent car, rather than spending a similar amount on a replacement vehicle which may well have its own issues.

To save money i would not bother paying someone to strip the engine down, the fact its partially seized and has fragments in the oil means its toast big time.

Kind of what I thought, but bear in mind I'm not a techie and wouldnr know what was repairable or not. I just thought it would be throwing good money after bad.

Turned out to be a con rod which had bent and twisted, they had to cut the camshalf to remove the old engine.
But we’re back on the road now.

They couldn’t rotate the engine at all, and spend a couple extra hours trying to remove the old engine before deciding cutting the camshalf was the only way to remove it.
Sorry, I don’t have any pics as it was all done by the local independent.

What route did you go down to get it back on the road? Also, would you mind sharing costs involved?

I could be wrong but I suspect it would have been the crankshaft that had to be cut to allow the torque converter bolts to be undone to get the gearbox separated properly, to rotate the cams they would have only needed to cut the timing belt but I cannot see how it would of affected engine replacement as I say I could be wrong though Current

ww88, she went straight to the local independent courtesy of the AA relay local garage. The second hand engine was 2600 and had 73k, there were a couple engine other options between £2.2 and £5k
Several parts of the old car were newish and were carried over, others like the oil pump, timing belts, etc were replaced. 31 parts at £1k.
Topped off by 32 hours labour and VAT on the lot. Basically a touch over what I bought the car for last year, but hoping this lot will last me a couple years.

They did say they couldn’t get even 1° of movement when they tried to turn it manually, but equally I might have misheard
