The one thing I feared has come to pass
Oh no, had a phone call from my wife. Engine oil light came on, then the engine management light and then the D3 coasted to a stop.
What’s the going rate for a replacement engine?

Yea, cambelt was done on schedule according to the receipts, oil pump had been changed, service history looked decent when I bought it. It had a full service prior to sale and altenator changed last month under used car warranty.

Within 6 months, isn’t one entitled to repair, replacement or refund? Where is DG with his impression of Morrisey the Consumer monkey?

Yea, I suspect the crank has gone. Its just over 160k, previous owner was doing 30k a year motorway work and servicing regulary/using OEM parts, so relatively mechanically sympathic. I think the issue came from the recent cold starts, I don’t think we got above 0 in the mornings for several weeks.
Main issue at the moment is now having to walk the kids to school on a busy narrow A-road, with no pavements and high hedges. The section is only about 400 meters, but we must have been passed by 50 cars and half a dozen coaches & HGVs, most well above the 40 limit.
Regards
Ray

Initial inspection has shown it isn’t 100% seized, but there is less than 1° movement being turned over by hand. Metal fragments found in the oil pump. Probably a bearing failure, but turbo isn’t in the clear yet until the engine is stripped down. Still looking at a replacement engine.
