Hope captain had third party insurance cover! His premiums will be going up on renewal!

After seeing these big cruise ships in Venice, they should not be allowed anywhere near, or even into the lagoon.

I used to work on cruise ships.
There would be Pilot given instructions, but it is still operated by the crew. I would hazard there was a mechanical failure, as they can do things quickly when they want to.
Once, in the Caribbean, our Italian Captain decided to take us through a narrow passage between 2 island !!!!! (Wasn't a Costa ship)
There were loads of little sailing dinghy's off to 1 side. He kept on blowing the horn every couple of minutes to let them know we were sailing through.
I think Sail has right of way, and this little thing was heading in a straight across the bow. Captian kept on blowing the horn, until he must have held it on for about 30 seconds. By which time he was shouting orders to the crew. Ship started vibrating, and leaning to 1 side. He did the equivalent of a handbrake turn in a very short space. 2 man sailing dinghy just did a quick about, and stuck their fingers up at us. Needless to say, we went back out the way we came, and the staff had to pick up a lot of broken crockery etc.
We had a day at sea, then back to home port. Captain was escorted off within 10 mins of gangway down, and new Captain arrived about an hour before we were due to sail.
It used to happen quite a lot. You make friends with crew from other ships, as you normally ended up in the same bars as them.... MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone
