Open letter to the People of Britain
(This would be the "rant" part of this section)
Dear owners of so-called soft-roaders/compact SUVs or whatever you think you've got.
Yes, it has slightly more ground clearance than an Aston Martin, and yes, it might go slightly further in the snow than owners of the Ultimate Driving Machine will get.
Yes, some of them even have 4-wheel drive.
However, dear owners of Renault Kadjars, Nissan Qashquais etc, the slightly improved abilities over 2-wheel drive hatchbacks in poor weather hasn't suddenly enabled your family car with the ability to bash through 2-3 foot snow drifts, regardless of what the advert might suggest.
What will actually happen is you will get stuck. Not maybe get stuck, you will defnitely get stuck.
What will then happen is you will block the road to emergency services, snow ploughs and people who actually need to get somewhere as a matter of urgency (and no, a McDonalds Big Mac doesn't count as urgent)
So far an abandoned car (Skoda Octavia 4x4) has prevented a Fire Engine getting through, and just now an ambulance has had the same issue.
Rant Over."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I had to resort to chains on the CRV to 'rescue' my family from the other side of the mam.
Even my mountain rescue chap couldn't make it up the hill with winter tyres so there was no way I was heading over with Scorpion Zeros on the D3.
The Konig XB16 245 chains were great, if a little uncomfy when driving on the lower section that didn't have 'sufficient' snow cover.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Possibly, but the Freelander that was blocking the road previously and I was trying to dig out has now been removed by tractor

Having done the LRE at Honiton in one I think that is a little unfair as the car was more than capable .

That looked pretty beached.
Also, unless it's lack of photo resolution, it doesn't seem to have winter tyres on either.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Yes, the main issue there was lack of ground clearance.....the X-Trail behind him had even less clearance, but it didn't stop him building up snow in front of him like a snow plough, before he finally got stuck and needed digging out "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

My Velar has been fantastic through the deep snow. Low traction launch is great, air suspension would’ve been handy but we work with what we’ve got.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Deep, long, short, large, small are vague non-quantified terms. Meaningless! Even a range of dimensions is useful. Favourite rant over.
Liked the comment about the curry hook on the coach post, J77. 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

Wife had a Qashqai 4WD in 2010 during the last extreme winter weather (prior to getting the Evoque). Have to say it got her and th children home when many others were stranded.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

I’m stuck at home at the moment as I cannot reach the main road, not even a Disco with winter tyres can bash through 4/5ft drifts - although it did manage the three foot ones and then did a three point (well multi point) turn to get back.

left the disco, took the evoque out today to get some shopping etc and a touch of work checking around...if the disco sport is half as good as the evoque then dont knock it.
ATPG was good for one section of untreated unploughed minor road
Low traction launch on, used but not needed at any moment so for the return turned it off
(grass, gravel) and Snow on TR
The car was basically unstoppable, through, over round where you needed it to go, it went - passed vans struggling with inclines (did feel bad stopping to ask if he wanted a hand, then carrying on when he said he was ok!) it wasnt bothered at any moment of its life out
Heated steering wheel was hotter than the d4 could dream (a point ill be making to the dealer next week when it goes in for that very issue), nothing froze externally and im sure the heating was hotter...all in that car keeps impressing - shame its tiny!Mike
