Had one of the front light units out to replace a bulb the other day, and noticed that ,on the out side (orange) edge of the unit, there's a short section of the strip which looks like there should be a bulb in behind as a side marker light.
So, being ever inquisitive, i opened up the cover behind the side light and found that there was already a wired in bulb holder. Just no bulb. but when i took the holder out of the socket, it didnt go al the way through to the lens - so i drilled it out put in a bulb, chucked it all back together - and hey presto - a side marker light!

So i repeated it on the other side. Looked nice, but noticed tonight that both have gone out - i'm guessing that the bulbs have got a bit hot a burnt out. will have to check tomorrow in day light.
Any one else aware of this/done this, or why they aren't fitted as standard You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.
DiscoDad did this a while back. Not standard in UK as constant amber light isn't acceptable to plod/VOSA etc.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
Yes my 01 did, and failed its first MOT due to them, which was a bit daft since LR fitted them.
"I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant"
Hmm, now you got me. Just checked the MOT standards for lights and it states "Any additional position lamps are optional and are not included in the inspection." so as long as you have white sidelights, that's ok for MOT purposes.
Construction and Use regs? Some googling required....I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
In that case, google it is.. worth checking i 'spose.
Do you know if Discodad did the rear lights too - these look like they have a position for bulbs too but no holders - obviously in red though..You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.
Did those on mine, didn't both with the bulb holder, just soldered a wire onto the spare bulb terminal, and spliced into the stop lights. works a treat.

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (as amended) are as clear as mud. Written in the very best spirit of the British civil service so as to be totally impossible to follow. I quote an example:
Quote:
Optional lamps, reflectors, rear markings and devices
20. Every optional lamp, reflector, rear marking or device fitted to a vehicle, being of a type specified in an item in column 2 of the Table below, shall comply with the provisions shown in column 3 of that Table
Side marker lamp
Schedule 9, Part II and Parts I of Schedules 2 to 5, 7, 9 to 13 and 17 to 21 to the extent specified in Parts II of those Schedules.
WHY NOT JUST SAY "Side lamp" and list the regs for the side lamp rather than cross referencing disparate bits of schedules and various caveats and exclusions found in a pile of different documents?I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Orange marker light are permitted to show at the front ... i.e roof markers on a Hummer 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

And newer Volvo's (that always look from the side like they're indicating when they're not!)

Yeah I was about to say, the Volvo S40 has amber side markers to the front.
I also think, but can't be too sure (it been a few years) that my one had red markers to the rear also.
Must pay attention next time I see one on the road.

It seems some D3's (like mine) don't even need to be drilled out - you can just pop a bulb in. Although I thought it looked cool, I took them out pretty quick because it also looked like an accident waiting to happen - like the volvo's.
