overheating

Discovery 4 MY11, TDV6

Suddenly the engine started to drink a lot of water.
Water temp normal.
Engine stopped and I managed to start and drive a short distance before stopping again. A lot of smoke from engine and from oil filler.

Hauled to workshop saying that a water tube had come loose and engine overheated. They tried to connect but did not get circulation.

Is the engine toasted? What is usually breaking when overheating?

Sad story.
But it is now handled by the insurancecompany.
Keeping my fingers crossed

A lot of smoke from engine and oil filler Big Cry depends how long and how hot, the oil reaches burning temperature thus smoke so minimum oil and filter change, next the cylinder heads blow gaskets and distort, the cylinder linings run dry scour and again distort until ultimately the engine seizes Big Cry Big Cry
I have never ever known an engine to run the same after boiling to the stage of losing water, even overheating will create symptoms like poor starting or running rough, when buying a car the very first thing I look for is signs of it ever overheating.

Why does it involve an insurance company?

Best not to tell them you restarted engine and continued driving after it had lost its water, they might just say it was your fault it seized, any excuse to get out of paying out Thumbs Up
