We came back from a 3 night P&O cruise only 2 weeks ago.
Firstly, it’s odd that it’s referred to as a “British ship”. It’s not been owned by the British for a while, the ship wasn’t registered here and virtually all of the staff were from around India; English was definitely not their first language and it did cause a few communication issues. The only “British” thing about it was a really stylish, stylised, Union Jack on the hull.
We were invited to a what was literally sold as a “patriotic, flag waving, event”, where everyone was given little plastic Union Jack / P&O flags to wave. We avoided it like the plague, but I can see how it might have been a good starting point for a Neanderthal punch up.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I can't believe the manner in which people behave these days. Yes, fancy dress was not permitted but this should have been taken care of by the crew. There should be no excuse for other people butting in and causing a punch-up when it's none of their business because they had taken offence.
The world has literally gone mad.Kev

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase cruisin for a bruisin, as they say in Weegieland.

We enjoy cruises but haven’t used P&O since a bad experience about 5 years ago. There was a group who seemed determined to cause maximum offence; swearing and shouting during quizzes and at entertainment venues; shirtless and throwing beer around the casino; throwing fish and chips in the theatre; and defacing some of the (admittedly over priced and dire) artwork in the corridors.
The big problem was that there were no officers present so it fell on the bar staff to police their behaviour and, at less than minimum wage, they weren’t prepared to get punched any more than I was !
To cap it all, there were reports of a punch up at a celebration of renewing wedding vows and an elderly couple put ashore for shop lifting in the ships stores !
Princess, which is part of the same group, is a whole different league with officers, including the captain, highly visible and taking care of the “hotel” side of operations.2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Must admit a cruise has never held any appeal for me. Always considered it as some sort of high class prisoner of war camp where you can’t escape the inmates by tunnelling out. Now it seems some of the behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated by any camp commandant! How low can some people sink?Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

I think it depends on the cruise line as stated earlier in this thread.
I had the opportunity to enjoy Radisson Seven Seas Cruises (nowadays Regent Seven Seas Cruises) in the Caribbean and there was absolutely nothing wrong with them as a cruise line. Stayed on the Voyager, had an aft deck “cabin” as large as my first flat with a huge balcony. No feeling of POW camps. All personnel were very polite, seemed efficient and were of various nationalities. Officers were readily available during the day and it was possible to join at the captain’s table for dinner.
I was there for business but would not hesitate paying for the same including for the excursions in Mexico.
