Hoping for a little help & advice regarding a pesky 'check engine' light and the code that my diagnostics software has thrown up.
So I have had a light on the dash for (forgive my negligence here!) a few weeks. I recently got myself a bluetooth ODBII reader and used this to grab the fault code. Here's what I'm face with
P0490 -Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Control circuit high
So I did a little digging and found that it's attributable to the EGR valves.
It could simply be a gunked up valve (I've got about 100k on the clock, '07 plate), or possibly any of the following:
Faulty EGR sensor
Faulty EGR solenoid
Faulty MAP sensor
Broken vacuum line
Faulty connectors or electrical wiring
I think it's unlikely to be wiring, it all looks good and the connectors are seated well. I checked along the vacuum line as far as I could without removing any components, looks ok.
That leaves the solenoid, sensor, MAP sensor and the EGR valve itself.
Are there any other relatively pain free things I could check before having to start stripping things down?
I don't know where the solenoids live, so I could check that with some guidance.
The sensor no doubt is part of the valve assembly, so scratch that.
Don't know what a MAP sensor is, sounds unlikely though
The EGR valves are a pain to get at, I don't think I have the tools to lift them out and I'm assuming they're expensive.
Is there any likely culprit above? Or Do you think I should go with the below option?
I looked at getting a £30 blanking kit for the EGR. Do you think this is a worth while option? I think it's highly likely that one or both of them are clogged up to high heaven but as I said, I don't have the tools so I'd probably ask the garage to do the fitment.

MAP == Manifold Air Pressure.
Should be cheap. Might hurt the least to try.

What did he suggest? Dave
D3 2006 HSE, Cairns Blue - gone
D4 2016 SE, White
Can anyone tell me how do you find out which one is giving trouble as I have that code up and don't know which side to start with.

Have you found the solution? I seem to have similar (or almost same) symptoms and wondering where to start...

EGR A is the RHS EGR and if its open it would normaly give MAP sensor fault as well, as the pressure will escape through open EGR. I would NOT suspect the wiring issue - time to change/fix EGR me thinks

I was thinking the same, but in such case shouldn't it be perceptible in performance of engine? In my case it seems that engine works perfectly without any difficulties and only P0490 appears occasionally (last week more often then earlier).

it means your valve is not fully stuck yet. If the valve get stuck in close position you will not have any lack of performance but still the MIL lamp

But in such case (if I understand it correctly) - if valve is stuck in closed position, it works generally the same as if EGR is sealed (except of the MIL indication) and there is no significant risk of further negative influence on anything else, right?
I mean - in such case is it urgent to deal with it quickly?

In theory yes. it works same as you blank your EGR. It may though open anytime ( most likekly aint) but can. So you do not need to run for it, but id consider sorting out when ready.
