It's just the crank fail (£12k for a new LR engine fitted or half that for a rebuild) and other areas where you might get a big bill - inlets, turbos.

Crank seems to be small percentage of engines but the best you can do is look after it - drive with mechanical sympathy and keep an eye on the oil levels - fuel door says check every 600miles and I bet most people don't - running low on oil won't do your crank shells much good at all, especially on a torquey engine like these.

I was in a similar position, but with a pretty much mint condition 280K D3.

Can highly recommend keeping the D3 and using it for tip runs, camping, mucky kids, parking in rough spots etc and then I totally love the D5 which is used for my work and long trips.

If I had to have one car... might be a bit more tempted by a Defender, but for the times we really want what a Defender brings, there's the D3, and for the rest of the time, there's the D5. All in, D5 + D3 probably actually costs less than 1 Defender. If you have a good D3 and can easily afford a D5/Defender, it's almost pointless selling an old D3...just keep it until it dies!

Family practicality I guess depends on what we’re doing…

If we want to go the beach or out for a muddy walk with the dogs, we take the D3. If we want to get somewhere a long distance away - we take the D5. We have a large dog box in the D3 which makes getting the third row seats out tricky… and I’ve not put the dogs in the D5.

The 306 SD6 in the D5 is light years away from our 2005 TDV6 - you really notice it at motorway speeds particularly in how low it revs… and radar cruise is superb. The D3 was always effortless cruising to the south of France… but the D5 is in another league. On journeys with the kids, I think everyone definitively arrives a bit more relaxed! The second row seats recline too - ours are out of car seats, but the reclining seats help them sleep on long journeys. The kids sit a bit higher and have a better view from the D3. Maybe I’m getting old, but the motorised and ease at which you can deploy 7 seats in the D5 is much better. Inside, we’ve got boot protectors and seat covers, so that’s all fine.

Space wise for the boot, the D5 looks loads smaller than the D3, but in practice isn’t that much… I guess it depends on how often you really cram the boot! I think the one place you notice it is in the tapered shape. We have a TransK9 dog box that took almost all the space in our D3, and it only just fits into the D5.

For me, I think the only real downsides of the D5 in terms of family practicality is :

1. The length of the boot drop down (small kids swinging their legs hit the bumper)
2. The black gloss trim around the car seems to mark (perhaps not to your extent!) much more easily than the matt black tough plastic finish of the D3.
3. Rear cup holders (The floor/tray ones in the D3 are really handy. There are no rear cupholders if you don’t use the centre armrest (if you are moving three kids).

Given a world of global pandemics, climate change and goodness knows what else we have to get used to, those don’t seem to be big things to suck up and live with!

Just be aware that John C's review is his D5 306 SD6 in comparison to his D3 2.7 TDV6

The car you drive is a D4 3.0 SDV6
Although body commodities on the D4 are much the same as the D3, the engine & drive characteristics aren't.



btw, not making any claims as to which is best/worse .... just stating.
 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

A colleague has a 3.0 D4 SDV6 which I think in terms of drive and power is very different from our D3 (and our D3 is exceptionally well maintained - like new). My D5 is similarly very different from that D4. THe SD6 is a bit of a dragster!

I would get the bad bits of paintwork sorted and just have the rest restored/refinished/polished. I had my steps galvanised and painted the aluminium edges the same body colour. I also had the wheels finished in the same colour.

I’ve sourced a salvage bonnet for £75, side steps for £160, mirror £60, etc. Must say it’s transforming the vehicle for little money. Rather fun too… 👌
