Paint Protection

I ordered a brand new D4 HSE a couple of weeks ago which is hopefully due to arrive 3rd week of July - can't wait! I refused the pureguard treatment that was being offered by the dealer after reading on this forum that it is hugely overpriced and likely to be applied poorly.

I would like to get some paint and leather protection though as I think it will probably be worth it. Does anyone know of a detailers in the Herts / Beds area? A mobile one would probably be preferable but happy to drive to one if the recommendations warrant it.

Many thanks!

the best paint protection is PPF clear film applied to the paint surface which in most cases is self healing

It is very good solution although very pricey too, I have been quoted 2900 + Vat for the whole Discovery to be protected with 5 year warranty on film and application

Good luck and how come your delivery is so rapid? I have ordered mid May with delivery advertise by the end of August???

I had my current car 'super guarded' ....didn't notice any difference.... but to be honest, all this, is, I think, a waste of time.... have a look at 'detailing world' and I think you'll find its not to be bothered with and to wax and seal it yourself...... but I'm no expert..... for sure..... Rolling Eyes

My 6 year old Land Cruiser has just been reported by Toyota as having 'under body surface corrosion' .... I could have told them that when I took delivery when it was a year old.... so that is something I would consider having done if I wanted to keep the car for many years .... but it involves spraying waxoyl or something similar into all the chassis bits that would never get done properly IMHO.... and its not easy to do yourself (tried doing it back in the late '70s ..... to an Escort ...... waste of time...and very messy and patchy).

I've no doubt my new D4 will also have under body surface corrosion on delivery .... I don't think I can get too worried about it ..... lifes too short (and even more so for the car)...... Rolling Eyes

Welcome to the forum!

I too declined the dealer offer of paint protection, and instead paid circa 300 quid to get a mobile valater from Max Wax to apply an Autoglym Lifeshine in my driveway days after taking delivery last month. Saved a packet over the dealer cost, and got to see it being done in my driveway with great care and attention. Took them about 4 hours of hard graft to complete. And the paint felt sooooooo smooth afterwards and shined a treat too. The proof of the pudding will come over time, but I think half of the secret is in the preparation and application, which we all know dealers don't always do properly. Well recommended if you can afford it and want go protect your investment.

Came with an extensive valeting kit to keep too.

I'd get a local detailer to come and do a full "New" detail on the car once it arrives.
Chances are once it's gone through the whole delivery and dealer prep process it'll be covered in tiny blemishes and swirls so get all those corrected out and a good quality sealant on top.

Which one is hard to advise on as it depends on the colour of the car, how often you are likely to maintain the finish and what you will use the car for.

If you want to keep the paint in tip top condition then £150 on a professional detailer to come and prep it really is very little compared to the value of the car.
Or it's great fun doing it yourself but it does depend on many factors as to what products are best.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm definitely going to get a detailing company to come and do a full inside and out protection job. When outlaying this much up front for the car then getting this done properly seems like a no brainer. Max Wax look great but unfortunately don't operate in my area. Does anyone have any positive experiences of any detailers in the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire area?

Regarding how come my delivery is so rapid, the dealer I bought from has apparently had an earlier delivery date agreed with Land Rover due to so many cars having been ordered recently. The actual date they have guaranteed me is 1st August, but apparently they're expecting it earlier, hopefully 3rd week of July. Hoping this isn't just dealer BS!!

I was just wondering if any one had tried that vinyl/film stuff on their Disco?

I was speaking to some one on the weekend and they had it applied to their RRS. I cost a small fortune but they were singing its praises in terms of scratch resistance. They had someone take a shopping trolley to a door and although the film had marked the paint below was unscathed.

First of all, full disclosure, I run a paint protection film installation company.

Now to answer your question, most if not all the paint protection services offered by the dealerships are little more than over priced polishes given to the car wash guys out back instead of the usual trade wax. They are usually sold with 'value enhancing' add ons like key finders, special offer booklets and such like.

You are far better off seeking out a good detailer who can explain all the various lotions and potions on the market, from waxes to sealants to ceramic coatings and anything in between, what they do, how they work and most importantly of all how much they will cost. You also need to factor in any paint correction (yes even on a new car...) that might need doing before the final finish (or 'lsp') is applied.

For the full monty have the detailer work with a ppf installation company that way the detailer can thoroughly clean and prepare the paint before you lock in that work with the ppf then the detailer can apply the lsp over the film and any exposed paint. It's not a cheap process but then again it's not an old snotter you have bought for a few hundred quid off the car lot on the corner... Thumbs Up

The benefit of getting an outside company in to do the work is that they will (should) be very concious of their reputation and ensure the jobs are done the the highest quality unlike the low paid car washers out the back of the dealerships who are always under pressure to fit another service wash in.

If you decide to go down either or both routes I would advise you do your due diligence on the companies, ask loads of questions ask to see previous jobs etc.

good luck

Steve
