My big 7 O is fast approaching and SWMBO thinks to celebrate it would be a good idea to go to northern Spain for a week and stay at a few paradores. Has anyone tried this if so how did you find the experience and how did you go about it? Intend Plymouth Santander then drive. Any help appreciated as the alternative is India not keen as my rear orifice has still not recovered form the last visit some years ago.

I have visit this area (La Rioja) very frequently when driving in classic rallies & on holiday.
I would certainly visit Haro and stay at the Hotel Los Agustinos.
I would eat in Haro at Terte & Beethoven and some of the nice tapas bars.
Visit a couple of Bodegas, maybe Cune & La Rioja Alta. There are lots of other things to do in the area.
Then maybe go into the Pyrénées or to San Sebastian-Donostia. There are lots of threads here about the Pyrénées & a search will throw up interesting routes to drive.

It is many years since my experience of Paradores .... BUT they were excellent, not cheap but well worth the money for that special occasion and 70 warrants that - next year I will be 80 so no doubt we will do something similar, especially as I married into a German family and there 80 is classed as special! You might also consider visiting:-
Logroño’ - where I usually stay at Hotel Calle Mayor a small XVI century small palace with 12 bedrooms in a central city location, with lots of interesting sights, and eating places within walking distance:-

Then maybe go up into the mountains at stay at another favourite:-
La Demba Art-Hotel & Restaurant
C/ Afueras s/n 22392 Abizanda (Huesca)

I am sure others will comment on my choices above, and have lots to add.

Brittany Ferries used to do great package deals that included the ferry and stays in Paradores as 'tours'. We went once many years ago and it was excellent, although my wife did see a ghost at the monastery Paradore we stayed at!!!!
