Parking brake emergency release - how to wind it back...? |
|
I’m sure this must be covered somewhere but I may have missed it...
I had to release the parking brake using the emergency cable following a jamming of the brake after a suspected breakdown of one of the brake shoes. I have bought a rebuild kit (shoes, springs, adjuster etc) and am going to tackle the job tomorrow. I’m going to strip and replace the entire shoe and spring mechanism on both sides and set it up per Bodsy’s Brake Bible.
Question: once I have fitted new shoes etc, then crawled under the car and opened up the actuator to put the cables back onto the threaded winding mechanism, do I need to do something special in order for the the emergency cable to reset itself to its original position? At the moment I have a foot of emergency cable loosely laying over the central armrest. Before I pulled it there was only a few inches under the switch.
I am assuming I need to do something to wind it back in, ready for another use in another emergency?
P.s. any other advice you have that might help the job go well, I’m all ears!! 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...
