Part time ‘retirement job’

Started my ‘pocket money’ driving job yesterday. Can see it’s going to be varied….

Yesterday was taking a brand new Ford Kuga 2.0d manual on ‘personal delivery’ to its new owner (nice car, well specced but seemed lacking in torque from memory of Ford’s of yore). Was picked up by another driver and we collected another driver up en route back to Warwickshire (he’d dropped a Fiat 500 electric off at a journo’s house).

Today’s wheels was a Transit auto down to a rental company in Portsmouth. Loved driving that. Went well (170bhp). Easy handover as they just take the key off you and scrawl a signature on the paperwork, no forensic check over or ‘showing the controls’ required.

Return vehicle was a Toyota Coralla hybrid thingy (typically boring Corolla, zzzzzzzzz). Has an awful CVT gearbox.

I’m off tomorrow and back in Thursday for the next ‘adventure’, not had to ‘find your own way home’, yet but it will come soon as will the joy of ensuring electric vehicle 80% charged before passing on to customer Rolling Eyes

Sounds interesting. Would be interested to know which vehicle movement company you're doing work for, as it's something I've looked into myself to fill in the gaps while I wait for my 'proper job' in theatre and events to restart in a meaningful way.

BCA Logistics always seem to be recruiting, but from what I've read/heard about how they treat their drivers it isn't exactly surprising.

My outward journeys will 99% be Ford’s as I’ve said I’m only working ‘out’ of depot local to me, the pay doesn’t justify unpaid travel to the ‘next’ depot 33 miles away. They do also do Merc’, Lexus, Toyota (hence today’s Corolla), Peugeot, Alfa, Fiat at least as ones I’m aware of and seem to be just be courting JLR at their new Lutterworth site (coals to Newcastle for me Laughing )

I am keeping a log (and pic’ Smile ) of all ‘my’ cars and I have a lot of mates asking about what wheels I get and ‘how’d they go’, etc.

I’ll message you gareth71 with some of the inside info Thumbs Up

My sons father in law is driving for a local high end independent car dealer. Gets to drive nearly new JLR cars, Maserati, BMW, Audi, Merc, etc etc.
Only been stranded once in Bristol area when the car he was collecting wouldnt start, he went down with 3 other guys who all just headed back home and said wait for it to be sorted. My son had to drive down late evening to collect him, 6 hour round trip.

local dealer was my first thought and enquiries but they had weekend working as part of contracted hours so didn't work for me.

Employee perks usually come with branded name employers but the contract/agency route gives option to pick and choose but with risk of first cut from rota if lean times (not an issue to me as it's not a job my 'mortgage depends on').

I can’t fathom why anybody would retire and want to get a job!
(Unless finances determine this ……. but surely not with the OP).

Me, whilst most people are working, I’m popping off on my mountain bike for a ride up the Galloway hills.

I’m only 56 and driving random cars to random places and getting paid for it is heaven for me!!!

It’s mainly because SWMBO still working (hence my caveat of no weekend working at all) and I’d rather be driving cars/sitting on my Censored on a train, etc. than any list of jobs she may have for me.

The ‘pocket money’ it provides is my slush fund for gadgets, motorbikes, cars and boy’s trips to Bergamo👍

All adds up to me Wink

Been delivering Rangers twin cab's rest of this week, private leased vehicles. Longest trip was down to Southampton, back to base to collect another and then up to St Helen's. Given the M6 was closed both northwards and southwards meant that one was a late finish....

Rangers are 3.2 bi-turbo. Went OK but not for what the engine bragged it was. Well isolated and mated to auto box suited. Well equipped and quite 'car-like' really. Can understand why people pick these if there is still the big tax perks over normal 4x4's?

Didn't feel that big from the cab but probably because, unless you have a hi-top fitted, you don't see anything past the rear window Laughing Definitely needs the rear reverse cam to judge the length.

Had a Toyota Proace MPV thingy on way back from St Helen's. It is literally a Peugeot with a Toyota steering wheel and grille, still has Peugeot infotainment branding (and you can get 'sister' Citroen and Vauxhall derivatives). It was quite a high spec, 180bhp auto with 2+2+2 seating and a fancy fold out table in centre middle row. Great 'captains chair' drivers seat and was nice to drive. That was until I found out the list price was £48k Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Not got my job sheets for Monday yet so no idea where I'm going or what I'm driving Thumbs Up

Sound like a great retirement job.

Our CHR was driven delivery to us and I can confirm the CVT takes some getting use and not my first choice for a drive train.
