Honestly....... I haven't been feeding 21 pheasants all winter from the shoot next door
However, is there such a thing as a "Transgender"

As I thought with all the inbreeding but have never seen one before.
However, fed around the same number last year ending up with 15+ hen birds that stayed in the garden all summer but never saw a single chick.
So......................... do hand reared pheasants still breed
or are all male birds jaffas

Reared pheasants do breed, but they are poor mothers. Quite often hen pheasants will turf other pheasants out of their nests or even partridges off their nests to lay their own eggs. In the days when we had the big partridge manors hen pheasants would be shot as vermin by the gamekeepers for this reason; even today wild partridge shoots try to limit the number of pheasants on the ground.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

On my shoot this year we seem to have had an unofficial policy of limiting the number of pheasant in the air!
We're having discussions about the future of our gamekeeper..... I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Is that limited numbers on the ground too, or have they gone for a stroll? We had a fantastic year from the beginning to end, only one day of the 9 was a struggle and that was because the guns were Sadly the owner died just after the end of the season so we’ll have to see what happens.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Our garden backs onto a large shooting estate so pheasants wander over to escape the guns. Yes they do breed and as Pelyma has mentioned they are very poor Mothers.
This pic was taken in 2016, sadly none last year as we had a vixen pitch up

There are always plenty of them on the road. Badgers too.
Great pics but I have to say, I would have shot the fox rather differently... Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Strolling and predation. On one shoot mid season I was astonished to see the fattest dog fox I've ever seen followed by his Vixen and 4 of last season's cubs come out of one of the drives. Our gamekeeper is a lazy sod and seems there's been no vermin management at all.
The following weekend I was watched with some interest by a vixen sat on a tree stump just 20 yards away as I took a pair of birds that came over.
For obvious reasons we don't shoot ground game when we have dogs on the shoot so there's a plan for a handful of us to head up there with hi-viz on and stake out the areas we've seen them.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Wires, lamping and a few drives, but you do need people who know what they are doing. Perdix Wildlife Supplies do the best wires, not cheap but very very good. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
