Ian,

Sidelights, yes! I noticed that there is a second wired bulbholder in these units but it is in a blind hole. What's this about? Can I drill it out and fit a second bulb, which will illuminate the amber corner marker? Will your LED sidelight bulb be short enough to fit?

Yes this is really stupid of Land Rover and other manufacturers

The spare holder is for the side lights for the US spec. It makes the car so much safer is it lets it be seen from the side on the likes of the A1 when your trying to cross or worst still on the central reservation.

It costs no more to drill the bloody hole out so why they dont do it i will never no

I recommend you gently drill the hole and it will light up the rectangular part of the indicator/reflector on the side of the light. the light is quite pointed and not diffuse but it does the trick

The D4 rear lights i bought had the side light on them so was pleased as i was planning on adding them

but dont bother with LEDs for them as you cant see them - use your old W5W halogens Smile

Calibration needed?

Hi Iain,

ISTR that the handbook suggests that you neede to get the calibration etc. checked after replacing the xenon bulbs. Is this correct and is that indeed the case, or can you just replace the D2S and continue happy motoring as with halogen bulbs? I have the adaptive xenons in a LHD car.

Thanks for the info and this great offer!

Regards, Paul

Hi. No need to do anything after replacing
on some cheap Chinese bulbs you can get bad
quality and hence alignment.
You should do a quick check against a wall to make sure both level
if they don't sit properly aligment is out. The dealer fit a new bulb under warranty and it wasn't in properly and lit road 5 metres ahead only.

Ian,

for ultimate light output would it be worth the money to replace the H7 halogen of the high beam reflector in the adaptive xenon units by the H7 35w ProPlus Xenon HID Conversion Kit (H7R bulb)? Will this improve the output considerably or isn't it worth it since the adaptive xenons are bi-xenon and therefore already give a xenon high beam? Maybe a replacement of the standard H7 by e.g. Philips X-treme Power or Ring Xenon Max will be enough combined with the bi-xenon?

I've also thought about upgrading the cornering lights to HID, but believe this cannot be done since these fade in and out which will not be possible with the balasts of the conversion kits. Am I right? Used the ABD Xenon Extreme White H8's but am a bit disappointed with the performance. Maybe could install H11 instead? (same base but no cap, 55W available).

Any thoughts or experiences welcome.

R, Paul

Hi Paul

In the past i converted the main beam unit to HID - and for sure the difference in output is mind blowing.
If you do a lot of dark road driving you can consider it.

However, for most people just upgrading the bulbs to something like the philips extreme, which are not whiter but they give better throw of light for sure, this would be good enough

You cant convert the corner lights to HID as they are on and off too quick. i have some upgrade bulbs to try but not got round to it yet. I have access to all the upgrade bulbs so will test them all and report back soon....

Regards
Ian

Great, Ian,

thanks for the information on this. Will have to convince the SWMBO that we badly NEED the xenon upgrade for the high beams, or at least the Philips X-treme bulbs. I was told that these are/should be better than the Ring Xenon Max as they have quartz galss and the Rings don't. Dunno if that's true though? I don't think you'll be able to notice the difference in output between the Philips (+90%) and the Rings (+100%), and quartz glass is much more shock resistant.

Look forward to reading the results of your tests on the cornering lights. I love the effect of those units but feel that they definitely need a boost in range and lumen. Probably the fact that they are only 35 watts doesn't help.

Thanks again.

Found the time yet?

Hi Ian,

did you find the time yet to test the various upgrade alternatives for cornering lights and fog lights?
