I had one in my last car that was down near the heater controls and it was annoying as you'd be looking too low. I've now mounted my new one up by the indicator and it's much easier to keep eyes on the road. I've got sat nav but I never use it as its nothing on google maps app so always glancing at it. . I've hidden the wires too which is easy enough so it's a nice clean install.
Reason it's mounted far left on the plate is because I sit high and therefore steering wheel is high so keeps the screen in full view.
