No big effort to make these pics. Whole area looks like this, endless rolling hills and tracks... ..hidden beauty of the inland part of the Algarve ! 8)
We are actually back now in the Algarve for holidays again. Picks above are from some years ago.
The rivers are treaturous.. ..got stuck two years ago. I do not have any gear like a whinch. So a guy got stuck in a dry river bed ( first mistake : never dry under the mud..), and I thought it would be a breeze to pull him out. He tried to cross the mud with a pickup. Imagine : canyon bottom, miles form any habitation and 47Celsius in the shade. I saw him in a glance heading down for a place to have lunch, and said to my wife to remind me to bring an extra bottle of water in case he would still be stuck when we returned home... And indeed : two hours later he was still there. So we drove to him through the bedding where it was rocky and got on the riverbank to drive past him. They were extremely happy to see us... ... he drank 1,5L in seconds ! Didn´t even think of passing it to his wife
Turned out he was stuck hours before we first saw them ! Not much traffic on that road, and he didn´t know the road we spotted him from. We could only see him a fraction of a second, and because our high seating. Locals wouldn´t look at the scenery and mostly have much lower cars.
The road is visible in the pics in the background, but standing there it wasn´t visible due to the blinding bright sunlight.
He managed to get the pickup 10 meters back, but could not get on the ridge. The slightly inclining hill ended in a drop, filled with mud. Thats what got me stuck too.
I tried to back-up to the rear of his car, because together we only had 10m of ropes. But on the -dry- dust, my car started skidding sideways, even standing still - dry dust - imagine . Would not have believed if anybody told me... So my frontwheel slid over the rock edge, into the mud ( wet only a few inches under the surface ). The car ended up almost parallel with this edge, so I could not get the front wheel out anymore. I was afraid the rear wheel woul slide into the mud and the one side of the car would sink... The drop was invisible before the wheel punched through the top layer !

Since the canyon is about 80m deep, there was no service on the cellphone. So I walked back about a mile, then up another mile along the road to get reception. Joker of 112 said they wouldn´t come if nobody was injured...
I drank already a liter on this walk, and coul hardly speak due to a dry throat...
I told him I was trying to help someone, and was out there with my wife and 4 teenagers !
So 112 called us a towtruck after a local farmer scared off when his tractor started skidding sideways too !
The guy from the towtruck had a modified Patrol, used as support vehicle for Dakar ; big wheels, higher suspension, and about 100m in cable on a whinch.

So he stayed on the straight and narrow and just whinched us out...
The guy in the pickup payed for the towtruck and gave us a fantastic BBQ some days later at his place.
