I haven't tried it on the D4, my serious off-roading days are behind me. Much easier on the wallet as well.

Well I ended up on the same road as yesterday by accident but going back to Settle. Icy this morning so less grip.
I can confirm that the HDC works extremely well and the ATRs are pretty impressive considering the icy conditions.
1st gear low box rock crawl mode I have heard is good for down hill in snow, never tried it myself but sounds logical.
ATR’s are good until you get to 4mm or so then it’s ar5e clenching time, now that was from experience Goodyear Duratracs

Been using my BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2's in the deep snow we have had this weekend. Absolutely brilliant grip in the white stuff. Can't reccomend these tyres enough for all types of conditions.

Just driven to North Wales on Friday and back to London again on Pirelli ATRs in the snow and ice. There were a couple of frightening moments, especially on the A5 when the D4 slid sideways at only 5mph but overall they faired much better than some of the other tyres/vehicles out there, especially when it came to forward grip (if that makes sense).

These threads are somewhat dangerous for those who think they can find an all season tire that performs half as well in the snow as a winter tire does. ATRs, ATs, etc are not as good in the snow as a winter tire. Over my 6 disco 3s and 4s I've tried most tires. I have new ATRs on my V8 now and in comparison to Continental winters in the snow, they just don't stack up.
Given the mass of these cars, if you're regularly driving in cold weather and in snow, then just stay safe and get a set of winters.
Anyone who tells you they've found the M+S tire that performs like a winter tire in the snow is talking out of their .PAGODA

The General Grabber AT3's on mine have the mountain with snowflake symbol, so have must passed the ISO 4223-1:2017(en) test for severe snow use tyres. A specific winter tyre will probably still out perform them, but they should be capable enough in snow.
Not tested mine in snow, I live in Devon and the stuff doesn't exist here.

Agree 100%.
If you haven't driven on a set of winter tyres how are you ever going to do a comparison.

Ah lads this is the worst tread I could be reading today. I just booked my D3 in for tomorrow for 4 wheel tracking (hunter) and to take off a set of Wintrac 4 Extreme and put on a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATRs. The Wintracs never put a foot wrong in rain, hail, sleet or snow. But Two of the Wintracs are well shot ( canvas appeared over the weekend on one of them:whistle: ) when I’m sorted I’ll post the two good ones on this site if anyone wants a spare

I would have a set of winter tyres over the ATRs.
There were two front wheel drive cars on the same road and the one in my direction was moving faster then I was. Either they were on fully winters or riding on massive testicles.
I have driven my Defender on BFGs in snow and lost it after power sliding in fourth gear whilst an X5 on road tyres was diabolically bad.
Surprisingly my MTB is pretty good in snow.

The reason I use ATR's all year round, is that an on-road winter tyre is useless off road and alternatives such as Duratracs and AT3's are too aggressive for the c.25k miles pa I clock up. I go off road every week and the ATR's cope really well. For my needs, the Pirelli ATR are the perfect on/off road tyre. I can get 50k miles out of a set (taking them down to 3-4mm) and they're tough as old boots.
I live in the West Country, so the winters aren't too bad. Saying that, I've owned Discoveries for nearly 12 years now and do have some experience of harsh winter conditions. Driven with care and using the TR system and HDC, I've manged fine with the ATR's. The worst tyre I've used when there was snow and ice about was the old Goodyear MTR. They were great on freshly fallen snow, but on compacted snow or ice, they were awful.
For on-road use, a good cold weather tyre will always be superior when the conditions suit. If I only drove on-road though I'd probably not have a D4!2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I've been running ATRs for a good few years now, and I'm impressed with them as an all round tyre. They are not perfect in all situations, they aren't as good a "road" tyre as a road tyre, or as good a snow/winter as a winter tyre. Funny that
In the recent snow I would have preferred to have been on siped winter tyres rather than ATRs, but then I'd have rather have been on ATRs than Scorpion Zeros which were on it before.
Life's a compromise
What I have been VERY impressed with on the snow though is the courtesy Disco Sport I'm running around in at the moment whilst my Defender's in.
Whether that's down to the tyres (Pirelli Scorpion Verdes), or the later Terrain Response and HDC, or it being an auto, or less heavy than the D3 (or a combo of those) I don't know. But as a package it goes to show that LR can still get the capability right despite the more frilly styling of late 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Lots of really good reviews on the Pirelli Scorpion Verdes - haven't seen anyone run them on a D3/4 yet but I am sure there must be by now.

As far as I know there are two different versions of the Verdes, one summer and another rated all weather
