Please help: Steering under joint removal

Good evening

I will introduce myself and my car in the appropriate topic as soon as I have time.

I have bought a Discovery 3 (2009, TDV6 HSE, 178'000 km) and am giving it a major service, apart from an overdue timing belt and leaking valve cover gaskets it also has the problem of sporadically stiffened steering. I replace the under joint.

I was able to loosen the under joint at the bottom but it is stuck at the top (screw has been removed), does anyone have any tips on how to get the rods apart at the top? Is there a special tool for this?

Many thanks for your help!

Best regards Valentin

Just turn the shaft until you can see the slot where the bolt goes through, then use a large chisel/screwdriver to open the gap on joint, use plenty of releasing oil.

Flack Thumbs Up

Many thanks to Flack, I was able to pull the under joint off the steering spindles perfectly. However, I had to put together a special tool consisting of:

1 large flat bit (ground flat on both sides so that it grips well)
1 bit 8mm
2 adapters from 1/4 to 1/2
2 extensions 1/2
1 impact wrench

This enabled me to spread the sheet metal.
