Well, I had to drive down into a old quarry at the weekend to complete a survey. The track was muddy which made access a bit interesting.

I definitely need new tyres, so I need to decide. My options seem to be:

GG AT3
GG X3? ( not sure on speed rating)
Pirelli AT Plus

Have I missed any others I should explore? I will need 255/55/19 Thumbs Up

Duratracs would be a good option, but the speed rating puts me off.

I don’t want to have to keep informing insurance about the change, and them getting in a pickle about it!

That might be the same issue with the GG X3 as well.

This is the label of the GG AT3s I had before. Same same!

The tread on the Pirelli AT+ looks odd, kind of blobby and rounded at the edges and I was a bit wary of it, but the spoor it leaves looks more reassuring.

I just asked my insurance company about dropping to a Q rating. Adrian Flux said:

"I have just checked the insurer terms for you. As long as the tyre is appropriate for the vehicle, and road worthy then it is absolutely fine."

Still can't decide if its worth the hassle of getting a lower speed rated tyre like a Duratrac or Grabber X3

“As long as the tyre is appropriate for the vehicle”

Id say they have pretty much covered themselves there really! I think any sunstantial claim made might raise the question was it appropriate and in maching the manufactures spec? Thats my worry anyhow and Adrian Flux have just told me that they could cover an T rated tyre but for 3 times as much cost as im already paying Rolling Eyes

Think they make it up as they go along Thumbs Up

Load rating is the important one, not speed rating. Speed rating is just the maximum speed the tyre is rated to at maximum load.

If a tyre is speed rated to 99mph and you have an accident at 50mph, the tyre's speed rating is irrelevant. Too low a load rating, however, might be considered a contributing factor.

Agreed and understood

Just a pitty most insurance companies are not interested in the facts and figures unfortunately and are not prepared or interested in being educated, especially the under writers they just don't want the hassle.

When I look at pictures of the tyres it looks as if the blocks are made up of a load of P and S

Duratracs seem to be advertised as a summer only tyre, without the snowflake marking.

Is that correct?

Years ago I was doing a lot of training on the ranges in Wales I had a D1 with BFG MTs on and found hat they were fantastic when new but when the tread depth got to around 8mm and the shoulders to the blocks where a little rounded they lost a lot of performance, used to replace them then, then sell the worn ones to ‘off roaders’ They thought they got a good deal I had new tyres for about half price.
The trouble with At & MTs they do require a good tread depth to work hence why your always pleased about your new tyres.
What I want is to be able to lock my centre diff going down a very slippery hill

Yes. They used to have the 3PMSF on the side, but now just carry a snowflake on the tread block which doesn't appear to mean anything in legal or performance terms.

I've bought AT3 instead as the Pirelli weren't available in the size I wanted

How does the AT3 sit on the car? The current GG AT I currently have on always seem to look a bit flat. Maybe it’s tje soft sidewall. Not sure!

Has anyone got any pictures of the AT3 and Pirelli AT+ fitted in 255/55/19
