Poor man's side awning
Well I've fancied a side awning for our D3 for quite a while, but can't really justify the expense of a decent one to myself, let alone SWMBO so after my £15 proof of concept tarp & poles setup:

I was wandering around Towsure in Sheffield last weekend & found a Sunncamp 7' Awning on sale (normal price there is just under £100). So I got a length of 50x50 3mm thick aluminium angle & a couple of lengths of caravan awning rail also from Towsure in their sale section & made up a quick fitting kit:

Which makes car-camping (daytime only cooking & general outside pottering) significantly more civilised:

So all I've got to do now is consider getting the side panels . . . . hmmm![/img]

You didn't say how much have the total build was ?
Good point, the aluminium angle strip which is 2.5m long was the most expensive at £30 inc next day delivery, then stainless bolts, washers & nylocks came in at under a fiver & the awning rail should have been £12 & I had the T-track bolts in from the tarp proof of concept.
Because I got the awning cheap as there was an end-cap missing (which Sunncamp have now sent me free of charge ) , the box damaged awning rail - I've been able to put it together for £100. Using my man-maths ninja skills I call it a bargain

Thanks chaps, still wondering wether to get the side panels for it - Towsure have them listed for £107, think even if I only used two of them it might be worth it.
Sailorboi: these are the boxes I'm using: http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/h...0litre.php - in the solid silver option (grey is a better description though), I've got four of them lined up down the length of the boot - it's tight, but it stops them moving about too. I've also got three of these http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/h...0litre.php on the back three boxes. The one nearest the middle row seats doesn't have room for one on top as the boot cover roller mechanism is in that space.
I'll take a picture when it gets light - it might make a bit more sense.
I've considered similar. Can i ask how you attached it to the T-Track rail on the roof (doesn't look like you are using a roof rack so presuming its attached straight into the T-Track?
thanks
Paul

First off, here's the boxes lined up in the boot:
and here's a few of the rail I've made up. Basically it's a length of aluminium right-angle with the awning rail bolted to it and three holes for T-track bolts go through to then mount it to the roof rails. I've put a bolt at each end of the awning rail to stop it from sliding out when we've moving:
I could do with either finding some T-track bolts that have a slightly larger base (the ones I've got are 20x25mm) as they spin in the roof rails, or I might weld some slightly larger plates to the bottom of them (I'm not exactly a welding expert though).
Only put it one once & it took about 10-mins to get the rail attached to the roof rails & slide the awning in. Was quicker to take it off too - now I've done it once think it'll be quicker to put it on a second time.
Just totted it all up if I'd bought everything new & full price & it comes in at £160 for the awning & rail. If anyone's interested, I can put a list together of all the bits.
