Possible diff noise?

Ok....after a year of fault free D3 ownership (ignoring the non-working FBH) I've started to notice a noise. It's been with me for a while, and a bit like tooothache I thought it would go away if I ignored it.

I'm getting a whining noise when on the flat. It happens when the engine is not under load when I'm cruising and I can get rid of it by either slightly increasing revs or by a dab on the brakes

Any ideas? I'm assuming that it might be the front diff but am happy to entertain any other opinions.

Could be diff noise but it may be worth putting it up on a ramp to see if there is any play anywhere, or even draining the diffs to see if there is any metal contamination. When was the last time the diff oil was changed, or even the transfer box oils?

Look for an independent willing to put the vehicle on a ramp and have a look around. They shouldn't charge to have a quick visual check of the drivetrain.
