Possible to upgrade radio? |
|
Hi all, is it possible to retro-fit the higher spec radio and steering wheel controls to a base model that came with only the basic radio (CD-400) and no remote controls?
Thanks!
Andy.

This has been asked before and I don't think it is possible due to the seperate amplifier etc needed for the higher spec radio. My suggestion to anyone wanting better audio on the base car (me included!) is to upgrade the speakers and fit an accessory connector to attach an ipod or other mp3 device in lieu of a CD changer 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

It should be possible... but expensive as the majority of components are different, speakers, door trims, amplifier, wiring loom etc. and of course it would all need configuring by the stealer dealer

Does the next radio up have a separate amplifier then?

hello alinton..
i hv the base radio as well, hever i retro fitted the weel controls
in the dealer, is ''plug and play'' around 5-10 mins to fitt, and costed me
abt 90 euros.
what else u can to to upgrade sound ? is to buy an aplifier and to fitt after the standard output to the speekers and obiously you will neeed then to upgrade seekers as well (ohh, with the aplifier u can hv subwoofer output
as well).

That's good and useful news Jacob, thanks.
Now I wonder about fitting the next radio up, and amplifier. Wonder if looms are there?
The next radio up has MP3 CD play, and its display shows frequency as well as station name - which is very useful in my game!
Thanks for the info.
Andy.

If it's of interest, I noticed that one of the traders on ebay was selling D3 amplifiers that looked like the under-the-seat jobs at £60. It came up during a search for 'Discovery 3' under a 'from our ebay shops/commercial traders' sub heading. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Just remember that the 'radio' is much more - its called the Integrated Head Unit and provides timing and wakeup signals to lots of other modules along with the CJB. Connecting other equipment to the outputs could seriously break your Disco3 Not looked at it too closely yet but I wouldn't mind betting that apart from the CD player and controls, all the audio processing, station memories etc. are dealt with by the amplifier unit

So is it possible, then, to plug in the head unit and the amplifier, and then get dealer to tell the CPU that they are there?
Is the loom there or is the loom completely different or is there a separate sub-loom?
Cheers,
Andy.

I don't know about the loom or what can be replaced, but I wish the quality of the radio was in line with it's price. I have the top audio system from factory, and the audio from the radio is disgusting. The CDs sound much better. Blue

Hi Andy, I have the base spec radio in my D3 and am able to display the radio station name and frequency. It's a feature that you can turn on and off. At least you can activate this whilst you decide to upgarde or not!
Cheers

Correction...
Radio station name OR frequency. Not both at the same time... What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!
