That'll be a "Yes" and a "Yes".
To illustrate the point, in 2012 I visited the North East of England to check out a holiday cottage on the moors. I'd found a green lane to access it by and on the OS map and Google Earth it didn't looked too bad. When I got there, I got half way along it and found that one of the stretches was covered in very large stones, was steep and pretty narrow. I parked to the side of the lane and walked it, before driving it.
When I got back to the car, there was a local standing by it, so I said "hello". She asked me if I was having a problem with my satnav and treated me like an idiot tourist! I tried to explain what I was doing, but she didn't really take it in. But, when she walked to the front of the car, she saw the leading edge of the bonnet and said "Oh, it's a Land Rover!!". After that, her attitude changed completely; she was really helpful and I got a lot of udeful local information from her.
"Discovery" may mean a lot to us, but "Land Rover" means around 10 times more to the general public!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

First world problem ...can't you moan about something more serious like the outside getting wet when it rains and then leaving watermarks on the paintwork 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Ha. I remember trading in my Disco 2 at the dealers. I had gone in "just for a look" as you do and didn't envisage anything more than that. The car wasn't clean, having been used for carting feed across mucky fields. "Ah don't worry" said the sales person "we've part exchanged Land Rovers with sheep in the back before now".

Well my 2010 D4 HSE had LR on the bonnet and on several occasions people referred to it as a Range Rover. I'm not actually aware of anyone ever thinking my Discovery wasn't an LR though and even if they did I wouldn't care. I know it's hard to comprehend, but there's plenty of people out there who have no interest whatsoever in cars
The new lettering really isn't a problem to me whatsoever. Despite my initial negative reaction, I've never once considered changing it.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I'm proud to own a Land Rover
I get a lot of stick from the BMW and Mercedes driving plebs in the company and however much stick I get, it just gets me more determined to put them in their place!
That Land Rover badge is a statement of defiance in a car park full of Bavarian clones! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

But that was my point, I'm not actually aware of anyone not thinking that my Disco wasn't a Land Rover. Even those who thought is was a FFRR knew that it was a Land Rover.
The Discovery name has been around for many years now and is associated with Land Rover almost as strongly as the Defender is.
I can see that the Discovery Sport might be mistaken for another marque, but IMO the D4/5 is very distinctively a Land Rover, even if it had no badges whatsoever. Those who know anything about cars will know it's a Land Rover and those who don't, well so what!2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

When I thumped my D4 on the M5 last year it needed a new bonnet - came back from the repairers with LANDROVER on the bonnet (no space between the D & R)
I'll get round to changing it one day

You wouldn't catch him doing that now, or many others in fact Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
