Problems reversing uphill when cold

Tried to reverse my father's 2011 D4 up his relatively steep driveway (was blocked from driving forwards by other cars) today when the car was pretty cold, engine revs climbed to almost 3k rpm but car eventually came to a stop and wouldn't go anywhere. I didn't want to give it the beans as something was obviously not happy.

Has anyone experienced this before? Wheels were straight, parking brake off (for the avoidance of doubt!) and I wasn't on the footbrake at all. High range. I know it's a heavy car but I don't think this should happen.
