My Disco 3 recently went in for its MOT and on inspection I found that the rubber around my bearing had perished, but the bearing itself looked OK. So, 1 tube of Sikaflex 221 later, and it all looks like new. I'll give it a week or two and let you know how it is. I just used a tool to keep the bearing centred overnight in the metal ring whilst the Sikaflex went off. It remained in place on removing the tool the following morning.

Can somebody tell me how a faulty centre bearing affects the safety of your vehicle?

I've just been told at my MOT that duff bearing is not a fail (mine is starting to go). Down to testers opinion maybe.

Well 2 years later and it's still going strong. No issues, so a winner for me.

Are there any symptoms to the prop shaft rubber going when driving out of interest?

I just happened to read up on threads on possible problems and found this one. So I checked my bearing and found that the rubber was breaking up. Sikaflex 221 to the rescue and a year and more later mine is still exactly the same as when I fixed it. No deterioration at all. It definitely worth checking them biannually and taking action if necessary. As long as the bearing hasn't yet been affected I am sure it will fix it fine.

Sikaflex 221 - quick fix for prop.bearing

Does anyone have a recommendation regarding what to use for the cleaning of the bearing prior to the application of Sikaflex?

Just done mine and I cleaned it with thinners before application. First problem was I could only get one bolt out of the rear joint so I had to just drop it from the front and work under the car.

Mine had failed the Mot and split around half way round so I filled it with sealer on one side then clamped it in place to keep it centred and left it to cure for a bit, then removed the clamps and filled the other side this was neater because I was able to turn the bearing as I smoothed the sealer with an old kitchen knife. Clamped it back up and left for 3 days to cure, I also ran a bead round the grease cap joint as a bit grease was being thrown out of there probably after the garage fitted a new centre bearing before we picked it up 3 years ago.

Took it back to the garage for a retest yesterday and when the tester brought it out he smiled and said good Tiger Seal repair there Iā€™ve done a few of them and it works well if done properly but weā€™re not allowed to suggest it.
