£900 lighter

well decided to book my new to me D4 for in for timing belts and also a full service, as the service done by the supplying garage is only oil and filter.

anyway quoted £700 for belts and service, but when they started stripping it down they found the oil pump was leaking, so that was another £200. all in all total bill £900, not what I wanted to pay but at least it is done. they did find numerous other problems which they have also rectified mostly loose clips including loose turbo hose.
would appear that whoever had repaired it previously had done a very poor job, they believe it had a new oil pump in but had it been badly fitted

Or they could just be saying that to minimise the "additional costs" so it looks like they are comforting you by these other small bits of work?

Did they take the body off or have they found a way to do the rear belt with the body in place yet?

they are friends of mine so they don't rip me off and show me all the problems they find.

No the body has not come off they have a mechanic with small hands that can get the back belt

and I get to run around in a modified TD5 with sports exhaust and remap that just sounds Awesome

by all accounts the garage that did the work somewhere in the Aberdeen area hadn't done a good job one of the bash plates underneath is missing as well

well got my car back. unfortunately they couldn't do the rear belt as somebody previously has managed to brake the plugs on the wiring that they need to unplug to get in. apparently the handle on the ECU plug has been snapped off so they can't disconnect the cabling there either. however they do believe that the belts had already been done so shouldn't be an issue.
result is that I get a discount on the bill Very Happy

So signs of sub-optimal work elsewhere suggests that the rear belt has been done previously?

Roll that dice.

Shocked

Leaving the pump belt is one thing on the 2.7, but the 3.0...

for the benefit of those of us who are less well informed on the differences between the 2.7 & 3.0, but aspire to own the latter, could you please elucidate?

The 3.0 pump belt is timed to the engine like the cam belt, on the 2.7 it isn't. Thumbs Up

but the end result would be the same would't it, you just stop and not cause major damage?

Yes, I don't think it would cause damage as such. I don't know if anyone has confirmed quite how important the timing is (but if it were me I'd rather not be the one to find out), but ISTR it being mentioned that it's down to matching pressure fluctuations with injection. With such poor access, just adds extra PITA to sort out I suppose, so seems very daft to leave it to me. Thumbs Up

Edit: Just re-reading things; I didn't mean to make a big point of it, BTW, but realise it may read slightly differently. Thumbs Up

as quite a bit of work had been carried out and the front one had definitely been done and with the mess of the plugs behind we believe that the rear has probably been done. however as they can't unplug the various connectors to get in we or should that be me has decided to take the risk of leaving it certainly for now. as advice I was given was that if it did snap it wouldn't damage the engine just cause it to stop.
