psst...and the back left drops 1/2 an inch - problem ?

Parked up the D3 for 5 mins whilst chatting to a mate. Rear of car is slightly raised compared to the front as I'd half reversed onto his drive. Suddenly there was a 'pssssst' and we watched the rear left drop in height by about 1/2 inch. I couldnt tell if the back right also dropped.
Is that normal ? What is happening ?

sorry if this is normal and a silly newbie question.
