purchase price

Hi Guy's.

Looking at a lot of for sale adverts on different web sites lately, with view to purchase.
Quite a few of the cars i look at state original purchase price of £ xyz.zz
I know you can get the built sheet from TOPix via vin number.

So he lies my question: Where do they get the original purchase price from?

Thanks in advance.

I would imagine that may mean list price, but there's a big difference between list price and purchase price, I certainly paid far less than list price.

example:
some of them like to say a car cost £30k when new and has £3.5k worth of extras and they are selling it for £20k saving you £13.5k...… on a 4 year old car!

its a clever way of them trying to blind you with 'savings on new' but it only highlights the depreciation IMO.

So from a website they will get the basic list price of the car when new, with a list of standard features and the price of each feature and use that. But that doesn't take into account any discounts or offers that may have been available when new, and they don't mention depreciation of that particular brand/model.

And let’s not forget the fact that the vast majority of car dealers don’t appear to have a ducking clue on what is standard equipment and what are optional extras on most cars.

I cringe every time I see an advert claiming “massive spec” or “loaded with optional extras” and then the advert just lists all the standard features of the car.
 Cheers,

Gareth

theres a car discount store here in the midlands that uses that approach - SAVING YOU ££££, but its on 3 and 4 year old cars, so you are not saving anything, thats just the depreciation.

I would hazard a guess the car dealers are using their Glasses guide for prices and I am assuming it also lists new price.

quite likely, but its not saving you anything from what its new price was when the motor is 3 or 4 years old when the dealer is trying to sell it now.

A real saving would be to advertise it as its current 3 or 4 year old market value, then be offering a saving off that.
