Am I missing something. Even before the French decided to shut the doors yesterday to travel into France, there were long ques of trucks waiting to get into Dover, but pretty much all the news reports are about shortages of stuff coming into the UK, but the que they keep showing is/was for outbound trucks.
And even with the restriction entering France its my understanding that trucks can still get into the UK.

There are suggestions that non-UK drivers may be reluctant to enter the UK in case they can't get home before Christmas. Containers and other unaccompanied freight can still get in, of course. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Yes but you wouldn’t drive a truck on a one way mission only for it to be parked up beside the motorway for days on end and spend your Christmas Day parked on your own on the M20....
This is what we get for knee jerk u turns.....
For every action there is a consequence...our idiots still haven’t realised this....
It’s a shambles.

There have been images and press coverage of the queues in Calais, which are pretty much the same.
The challenge will be around foreign drivers being willing to travel to the UK. Alongside of the risk of the new strain, it's the problem and risk of being trapped in the UK if they can't get back. With Christmas four days away, many won't risk it.
I'm hoping my new car has made it across from Zeebrugge.
Anyway, I wonder what time this morning the panic buying will start. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

I admire them for doing it, if China had done this 9 months ago the world wouldn’t be in the predicament it’s in now. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Many eastern european trucks arrive in the UK with little or nothing in their trailers, then wait for an export load.
The vast majority of the drivers are not paid for the days 'doing nothing'.
The cost of running trucks in these countries is maybe 10% of those which UK trucks have to pay, and don't be fooled by them all having newish trucks, they don't pay anything like what we do here.
To some, spending Christmas in their trucks is accepted to have a fairly 'home' decent wage.
Those with no knowledge of the trucking industry should not make comments that are total b******s, and serve only for your constant bashing of anything and everything you don't agree with.
We have a Tory government and will be out of the EU in a few days, the majority wanted both, now get over it!

Well, the majority didn't want either but the system we have gave us that outcome. But this is not the place for that discussion. We have those in the under-stairs cupboard marked "Off topic - Politics". Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

If the above statement had been applied to the Brexit vote we would not be in the turmoil we have been in for the last 3 wasted years. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,

Alot of freight companies have been running like we are in WTO rules since the start of November so these ques are less to do with Brexit and more to do with the Christmas rush, more online orders requiring fulfilment, blocked Felixstowe, and a rush of export orders to the EU ahead of a possible no deal.
The French closing borders is less to do with C19 and more a political finger to us.
More and more companies now routing via other ports for the new year.
Just my experience before the drugs kick in.
All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.
