would suggest that anyone who has got loads of sludge, has got a bigger problem with their car than any drain plug could solve I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

.....there is a sump plug, with a drainage bolt that has to be discarded and replaced if removed.
As TFC has already pointed out, the engine oil needs to be warm/hot before either of the two possible drainage methods are employed.

There is a rather slim black tube with a removeable cap. I thought that was going to have the dipstick in it but its just an empty tube. Its a very narrow tube though so pretty sure no sludge would get sucked up there
By the way - do modern synthetic engine oils cause sludge ? I had a few V8 Rangies that created more sludge than the village sewage works. And most of that sludge formed in the rocker cover in a horrid yellow gungey guckiness. Probably the 20:50 Duckhams Hypergrade Oil I used to use. £5 for 5 litres in a tin can - but why was it GREEN !? Memories .. then check out this old advert ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8jTCBIBLII
My new policy is to not change the oil (other than dealer services) but do change the vehicle every 3 years - 60,000 miles before the end of the warranty period Disco 4 TDV6HSE

ever seen a hospital suction pump? you'd be suprised at how much 'human sludge' they can evacuate... they operate at 20% of a typical oil suction pump vaccum, engine oil 'sludge' is nothing more than accumulated carbon deposits, it can and does get removed by a vaccum oil pump
Whatever engine you have, if you want to get all anal about oil deposits remaining after an oil change, I suggest you double flush your engine with Kero, it'll remove every trace of lubricant and associated deposits wouldn't want to run it afterwards though! The reality is that bar stripping the engine to component level, there is no way to extract every bit of old lubricant, carbon, or other contaminants at service get used to it and get over it
BTW, BL Farrar, were you and BBS Colin separated at birth?

......sightly less with semi synthetic Castrol & some Penn state oil I have used
Havent seen this on the diesel engines used over last 10 - 12 years BREXIT - done properly.

Another "quirk" is the fact that the D4 still has that sticker inside the fuel filler cap showing a picture of a dipstick telling you to check your oil every 600 miles. Disco 4 TDV6HSE

I was curious (as a previous TDV6 SE owner), if the steering knock has been adressed in the D4, also if the air suspension/compressor have been redesigned/improved, as these were some of my main issues with the car...
