Rack ideas for carrying two canoes
I am trying to come up with a cheap solution to carry 2 canoes on my LR3. As this will only be used 1-2 times a year I do not want to spend the money on a whole Yakima or similar system with 80" bars. I have the factory short tracks and cross bars.
On a previous Ford Explorer I was able to attach 2X4's with U-bolts to the existing rack as the outer rails were raised. Hoping for a similar 2X4 solution on the LR3 just figuring out an attachment is trickery. I have seen the frontrunner feet set which does appear to be promising as attachment points if an alternate solution can be found to mount them in the OEM tracks as the T-bolts (square head bolts) provided don't fit.
Another idea I am floating is to use compatible t-bolts in the existing slot on the OEM corssbars to affix the 2X4s on top of the crossbars. So far I am coming up short as I would need suitable t-bolts that are at least 2 1/2" long to reach through the wood.
Get a pack of Thule feet ... they come on here now and again but postage May be an issue for you? ... then mount a plate on those to accept your 2x4s..

I looked at the Thule and Yakima feet but neither seem conducive to attaching a 2x4 to the top. They could only accommodate a single small bolt which wouldn't be sufficient.

My suggestion would be to make some oak inserts as feet for the roof rails. You could plain them to have a taper on each side. Make them as long as the slot on the roof rails so they will get max strength.
Put a couple of captive bolts up from below (Aroldite in place) and when you then put the wooden cross bars on they would clamp up and hold against the inside of the roof rail.
Oak is a strong wood and it holds boats together very well.
Anyway just an idea of how I would go about it if working on a low budget.Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

I use this system which is great. Long journeys at speed and it holds two kayaks very well. Has tie downs at the front and rear also (not seen in this pic). I use ratchet strops to hold the kayaks in place. Let me know if you want the details. This is a cheap solution and fits on standard issue LR roof bars.

Pagoda,
I would be interested to see how it attaches. Curious if that set up would accommodate 16 and 17ft canoes. They would create quite a pocket for the wind to catch where as the kayaks are enclosed on top.

Ryan,
These are 16 feet kayaks. I've taken them to many places over the past few years. Car sits happily at 75MPG on the motorway, not a problem. Perfectly stable (watch them through the moonroof), although I do really ratchet them down: two per kayak; front and rear; a center strap around both kayaks; then a front and rear stabilizing tie down. There really isn't a air pocket issue. V8 just powers through!
Very happy with them.
Here's the link so you can see more clearly how it works. I think I paid about $100 US.
